You have been admitted to the master's programme in Ecology at Umeå University. We warmly welcome you and hope that you will have a rewarding study time at Umeå University. The program director for the master's programme in ecology is Pär Byström (par.bystrom@umu.se; https://www.umu.se/en/staff/par-bystrom/), who you will meet at the program introduction and as lecturer on Aquatic ecosystems, one of the two possible mandatory start courses of the programme.
As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
With your user account you can:
register for courses
access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
submit assignments and verify your study results
access your student e-mail
If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
Install MFA for a more secure login To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.
If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

Please note that if you have been applied to the programme in the national/european application round you have to accept your seat by answering at universityadmissions.se/antagning.se.
The programme starts with introduction on Monday August 28, at 9 am on campus (in lecture hall KBG501). A map of the campus area can be found at Campus Umeå university. The first course of the program, is either Aquatic ecosystems (course introduction in KBG501) combined with Aquatic ecosystem ecology or Forest ecology (lecture hall will be announced later) and they both start August 28, at 10 am. More detailed course information and schedules will be available on our learning platform which will be presented during respectively course introduction.
Please note, that you must be registered for the starting course you plan to take (either Aquatic ecosystems or Forest ecology) in the study documentation system to be able to follow the course and get your credits registered. If you for any reason cannot arrive on time (28 August) you must contact our department study counsellor immediately Sandra Straumdal (sandra.straumdal@umu.se). The latest date you may arrive for studies is 30 August. If you have not registered on your selected start course by this date you will not be allowed to commence or continue your studies.
For student that starts in the autumn, the mandatory elements of the master’s programme in Ecology consists of 3 or 4 courses during Year 1, depending if you specialize in Ecology or Environmental protection.
In the second year, you can choose freely among courses to tailor your master degree and you end with a final Degree thesis project of 30 ECTS or 60 ECTS.
The mandatory course contents are to large extent research focused and teaching is to high degree conducted in close collaboration with on-going research at our department.

International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.
If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.
Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.
Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the semester (Autumn) or the same day as the semester starts (Spring).

Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
