Before writing your thesis, you will build up your mathematical and computational skills by taking courses from our catalogue of advanced courses in mathematics.

You may also, with great advantage, combine your mathematics courses with courses in computer science, natural or social sciences, economy, or other areas of interest.

Live in a young and fast-growing city

Umeå provides a highly attractive environment for studying. It is a young and fast-growing city of around 120,000 inhabitants, of whom over 35,000 are students. This makes for a rich cultural life, with many pubs, cafés, restaurants, concerts and festivals. There is also an opera house and museums, and Umeå was the European capital of culture in 2014.

The city is small and extremely safe. It is easy to gain a comfortable and sustainable living style. There is an extensive network of bicycle paths – making it possible to get around by bike all year round. The wild nature is very close! The Ume River floats through the city, the northern lights hunting is popular at the Nydala Lake, and skiing is magic through the Gammlia Forest. Outside the city limits, there are vast areas of wild forests, rivers and lakes, and by the Baltic Sea there are sandy beaches for summer recreation.

Student housing

The University offers student housing to exchange students, tuition fee-paying students and full-degree students who are citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

Students not falling under these categories have to arrange their own housing. If you start in due time, you will not find it very difficult to find to arrange housing in Umeå. Please check the advice and services provided by our housing service.

There is flexibility to mix and match courses from the various profiles of the programme, and from mathematical statistic, physics and computer science. Your mentor will help you choose a tailor-made set of courses from the available options.

In addition to the regular courses listed above, we offer other advanced-level courses on a more ad hoc basis, with topics covered in recent years including Differential Geometry, Measure Theory and Combinatorial Number Theory. Students on the programme may also replace suggested courses with courses from the sister programme in Mathematical statistics or take advanced undergraduate courses in Topology, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Graph Theory, Number Theory and Algebraic Structures if they have not taken such courses before.

In modern society, mathematical methods and analytical skills play a very important role. An education in mathematics is the starting point to a career in all fields where mathematical methods are used. Therefore, you will find mathematicians in key positions in the industry of cars, robotics, pharmacy, telecom, IT and software development. Finance, banking and insurance companies are also keen on employing mathematicians, as are research institutes and governmental organizations working with everything from societal development to questions of national security.
