WELCOME TO THE COURSE
We wish you a warm welcome to the Master`s programme in Public health at the Department of Epidemiology and Global health - Umeå University.
The program starts with an introduction day on Friday August 26, 2022 (not compulsory) as a part of Umeå University’s Orientation days.
The schedule for the Orientation days will be available on the site above when ready. There may be last minute changes to the schedule, so you should check for updates.
You should try to be in Umeå at least some days or a week before that in order to settle practical issues before the teaching starts.
The first course, Global Public Health, starts Monday August 29. You will get a schedule (sent by mail) and link to the welcome letter one month before the course starts.
Registration on this course is also the start of the programme!
You need to be registered in the study documentation system to be able to follow the course/programme.
If you are unable to attend during the registration and introduction, you need to contact, course administrator, Eva Selin, in advance, or else you risk to lose your seat/place in the programme.
The latest day to attend and register for the programme is September 12!

The studies in the Master’s Programme in Public Health (120 credits) comprise a total of four semesters (two years), which corresponds to courses of a total of 120 higher education credits. The degree project comprises 30 of these credits
The studies are characterised by a high degree of independence, actively seeking knowledge, problem solving, critical analysis and evaluation based on a scientific approach. The work formats vary between individual work, work in study groups, seminars and lectures. The course syllabuses present the entry requirements applicable for each course.
All teaching takes place in English. Note that all teaching material will be available on the learning platform Canvas. All students need to bring their own laptop and some sofware licencis will be provided if needed.
Some courses are presupposed to be taken in a certain order, as presented by the course syllabus.
Course overview
First year, all courses are compulsory!
Global public health. Biostatistics. Epidemiology. Qualitative methodology in public health. Health Systems: Organization and financing. Health economic evaluation methods. Theory and Managment in Health Promotion. Master thesis, first year.
Second year compulsory:
Evidence based public health, Equity and health, Qualitative data analysis, Advanced biostatistics and epidemiology, Health, environment and sustainability, Leading change and development in welfare organizations, Evaluation in public health, Master thesis, second year.
Second year eligible courses:
Advanced topics in health economics evaluation methods, Social epidemiology – theory and methods.
Housing:
Housing for students in Umeå is mainly in special students’ housing with a number of rooms sharing a kitchen, but each with its own toilet. A student room is the cheapest housing. Keep in mind that it`s not allowed to live more than one person in each student room!
Umeå University Student Housing assists tuition fee-paying students and Students with tuition reduction/scholarships by helping them to find accommodation in student rooms. Follow the link above for Information on how it works.
For students coming from outside Sweden and who are exempted from paying tuition fees (for example European citizens) we recommend that you start to search for accommodation very early after admission.
Finding a place to live is an important concern and Umeå University is only mandated to help exchange and tuition-fee paying international students in this regard.

In June, our current students, (UISPH friends) will create a Facebook platform where you can chat with them. You will have the possibility to chat and ask them anything – about the arrival, what autumn is like in Umeå, what you might need to bring, etc. Link to FB will be updated later!
When you arrive here, you will meet some of them in person on the Department Introduction and they will help you to get familiar with Umeå and studying at UISPH.

CloseRecommended arrival times
International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.
If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.
Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

CloseAccess to Microsoft Office 365
Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
