Meet Monique from Jamaica

Why did you choose to study at Umeå University?
The programme was the most ideal as it was closely related to my Urban Planning background.

What do you like most about your programme?
The knowledgeable and approachable lecturers along with the diverse mix of international students. The students in the Spatial Planning programme represent nine different countries and thus there can be some very interesting discussions about views and cultural practices from their home countries. This can be very interesting especially in the field of Spatial Planning.

What has been your most memorable moment about the programme so far?
The most memorable moment of the programme was the defence of my thesis. This was when I realised that two years has flown by very fast. It was at this point that I begun reflecting, assessing and summing up the two years and realizing that success truly comes through hard work and that studying at Umeå University was a pleasure.

What do you do when you're not studying?
When not studying I am involved in the University's Buddy Programme which usually has planned social events or trips which involve skiing or visiting an elk farm. Sometimes I hang out with my classmates. With so many students from diverse cultural backgrounds there is a lot to do so we spend a lot of time sharing cultural experiences and being involved in Umeå community events.

What you like best about the town of Umeå and its surroundings?
I like that the town is clean, safe and there are a wide variety of events planned by Umeå Municipality so there are lots of activities which can be carried out within the town.

What do you find as the biggest cultural difference, both socially and educationally, from your country with Sweden?
The biggest cultural difference both socially and educationally with Sweden and Jamaica is that you do not have to address persons formally with Mr. and Mrs. and that the lecturers are friendly and have an open door so you can walk in at any time, speak about any topic and feel welcomed.

What you would say to another international student thinking of attending Umeå University?
Umeå University has an excellent learning environment for students. The lecturers are friendly and students come from different countries, thus there is an opportunity to learn different cultures while studying.

What are your career aspirations?
To use the skills and knowledge gained at Umeå University to benefit Jamaica in the field of Urban Planning.
