Master's Programme in Statistical Sciences

Welcome to the Master's Programme in Statistical Sciences at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE), Department of Statistics. Before you can start the programme there are things you must do, here you can read what, how and when. You can also read more about the programme, the University and life as a student. How to start

  • 1. Reply to your offer

    You have been admitted, but in order to keep your place (seat), you must reply to the Notification of Selection results at by 26 July 2019.

    Support for students with disabilities

    If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Register on the programme

    When you have accepted your place (seat) on the programme, you must register for the courses. 

    During the first half of the semester, you will take the mandatory course Statistical Programming parallell to an elective course. For the course Statistical Programming, you register at the course start/ introduction, September 2.

    This course start is also the official start of the whole programme, but depending on your choice of elective course you might start another course already earlier the same day. Registration at the elective courses either take place at course start or by online self-registration (see respective course sites).

    If you are unable to attend the introduction at the course Statistical Programming, you must notify us in advance in order to not lose your place.

    Notify our Study Administrator Katarina Kempe before September 2, and you will be registered and get to keep your place, even if you cannot attend the start of the course.

    Elective courses

    The choice of electives the first semester is made after a discussion with the program coordinator after you have received information about admission to the program. You will be contacted (e-mail) by the program coordinator regarding this. Then you will be given a deadline for making your choice too.

    You are guaranteed a place on elective courses equivalent of full-time studies, but there is no guarantee of first choice. Moreover, some of the electives require specific Mathematics courses or proficiency in Swedish (if the course is given in Swedish), which might limit your choices. The elective courses available this year is listed below together with the required knowledge for entry.

    During the first half of the semester, the following electives are offered: Probability Theory 2 (requires a course in basic calculus or equivalent knowledge), Multivariate Data Analysis (requires courses in basic calculus and linear algebra or equivalent knowledge), and Linear Algebra.

    During the second half of the semester, these electives are offered: Big Data and high-dimensional data analysis, Inference Theory 2 (requires Probability Theory 2), Calculus for Engineers and Linear Algebra (video lectures). Parallell to these electives you will take the mandatory course Causal inference during the second half of the semester.

    All Mathematics courses, i.e., Linear Algebra and Calculus for Engineers, offered are basic level courses given in Swedish.

  • 3. Programme start

    Monday September 2, 2019

    Time: at 13.15

    The course Statistical Programming starts with registration and introduction. This is the official start of the programme too. Depending on your choice of elective course you might start another course already earlier the same day.

    The schedule for the Orientation Course for international students (starting 28th of August) will be found here.

    There will also be a special information meeting for all International Students at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE) Tuesday the 27th of August at 2 p.m. in the Humanities Buildning lecture hall G.

    You will be allowed to arrive one week late (although it is not recommended).

    If you arrive at USBE before 4.30 p.m. Monday the 9th of September you will still have a seat at the program. If you arrive later you will no longer have a seat at the program and will have to return home as your residence permit will be revoked. No late arrival is permitted.

    For this programme, we use the learning platform Cambro. There you will find everything you need for the course, such as the schedule, instructions for exercises, list of participants and messages from the teacher.

  • Checklist for admitted students

    Follow this simple list of things to complete your enrolment at Umeå University. It includes: how to secure housing, getting a residence permit (for citizens from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland), tuition payment (if applicable), travel directions and more.

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular term, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but not later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme.

    If you will have housing through the International Housing Office you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

    Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins before the start of each term.

  • Activate your user account

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account approximately two weeks prior to the term start in order to, for instance:

    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • register for courses
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the term start.

    For exchange students
    If you are an exchange student, you will receive information on arrival about how to activate your account.

    Help! It's not working
    If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • building access
    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card.

  • Welcome fair

    Getting to know your new university

    At the Welcome Fair, we present what the University and Umeå has to offer new students in order to give you the best possible start to your studies with us.

    However, considering the current situation with the new coronavirus and the insecurities regarding social gatherings and event, we cannot be certain that the Welcome Fair will take place as usual. Naturally, we keep ourselves updated on the developments. Nevertheless, we can make you one promise: we will do everything we can to make you feel welcome at Umeå University.

    They are actively involved so that fellow students have a high quality of education, good working environment, and fun leisure time.
