The International Business Program leads to a Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics which is a professional degree on advanced level. To read about education on basic- and advanced level see the Higher Education Act 1 cpt 9 § (Högskolelagen 1 kap 9 §).
The Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics is attained after the students has achieved 240 credits. For the Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics the student should show the knowledge and abilities that is needed for qualified and independent work within the business area.
Knowledge and understanding
For the Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics, 240 credits the students should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the chosen business fields’ scientific basis and proven experience and insight into current research and development
- demonstrate broad knowledge of the field as well as deeper knowledge of certain parts of the chosen field
- demonstrate deeper knowledge of theory and method in the chosen main field of study, and
- demonstrate knowledge of relevant national and international regulations relevant to the chosen field
Skills and abilities
For the Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics, 240 credits the students should be able to:
- demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge and with business perspectives analyze, assess and manage complex phenomena, issues and situations
- demonstrate the ability to independently identify and formulate issues to address and to plan and use appropriate methods to carry out advanced tasks within specified time limits;
- demonstrate the ability to verbally and in writing present and discuss their conclusions in dialogue with different types of groups in national as well as international contexts, and
- demonstrate the skills required to participate in research and development work or to work in other advanced contexts.
Ability to evaluate and approach
For the Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics, 240 credits the students should be able to:
- demonstrate the ability within the main field of study to make judgments with regard to relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects, and demonstrate an awareness of ethical aspects of research and development
- demonstrate an understanding of the importance of leadership and its practice, and
- demonstrate the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and to take responsibility for the personal competence development.

For the Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics with a specialization in International Business , 240 credits the students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of organizations' conditions in a national and global perspective for decision-making
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of working in an international environment and intercultural context.
Skills and abilities
For the Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics with a specialization in International Business, 240 credits the students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an ability to critically relate to information and systematically and analytically address complex business problems.
- Demonstrate an ability to collaborate and communicate in an intercultural context to solve practical business problems.
- Demonstrate an ability to integrate ethical and sustainable reasoning in analysis, evaluation and decision-making.
Examinations can be in the form of written exams, oral exams, seminars, written assignments individually or in groups.
The program applies a three-point grading scale with the grades, Pass with distinction, Pass and Fail, unless otherwise stated in the syllabus for a particular course. Those who pass an exam cannot redo the exam aiming for a higher grade.
Students have the right to apply for recognition of previous courses or activities that can be accepted for credit transfer. More information at Umeå Universitys website.
A negative decision on recognition of previous courses is possible to appeal to the Higher Education Appeals Board. A negative decision should also be motivated in writing.
Content and structure
From the program overview under the headline Outline it is stated which courses are mandatory and which are elective. Selection of elective courses is made in consultation with the program advisor. The courses are studied in the order specified in the program outline. The order of the courses may be subject to change. Information about the individual courses is available in the various syllabus.
Specialisations and profiles
In the International Business program students study business administration or economics as main field of study. Students are able to choose between various specialised profiles within business administration. The possibility of studying accounting with the goal of subsequently working as a chartered accountant in Sweden is not possible with the courses taught in English in the program. In this case, the student must complement with courses taught in Swedish in addition to those included in the program structure.
Internship
All students in the program are offered, as an elective course, the opportunity to apply for the program specific internship course with international orientation.
Degree project
For the Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics the student must write a Degree Project of 30 credits.
The focus of the Degree Project should correspond to the chosen major and will be written under the supervision of an appointed supervisor. The Degree Project is written in English.
Deferment of study entry may be granted if special circumstances exist. Examples of specific reasons are social, medical or other special circumstances such as child care, military or civil service, student union assignments or postponed leave according to law (1974:981) on work labor rights to time off for education. Application for deferment is to be submitted to Student Centrum.
A negative decision on deferment of enrollment may be appealed to the Higher Education Appeals Board.
The student admitted to the program can apply for a study break. The application is submitted to the Program Coordinator. Study break with a guaranteed seat may be granted for the following reasons: social, medical or other special circumstances such as child care, military or civil-service or student union assignments.
Negative decision to resume studies after study breaks can be appealed to the Higher Education Appeals Board.
Students who interrupt their education shall notify their dropout to the Program Coordinator.
Access to courses in the program is governed by the course syllabus.
