Contents

The course covers the design of vehicle interiors. This includes studies and information on component placement, feasibility, legislation, functionality, colour and clothing development, technological influences, trends, requirements regarding adaptation and surface texture.

  1. Applied Ergonomics, 1.5 credits.
In this part an introduction is given to human interaction in a vehicle. This involves complex aspects such as component placement, feasibility, regulations and security.
  2. Colour and Materials introduction, 3 credits.
This part deals with the importance of materials and their impact on the designs form and perceived characteristics. Trends are evaluated and used as reference materials.
  3. Applied Graphics, 1.5 credits.
This part deals with importance of graphics in interiors in terms of visual efficiency and clarity of design. The importance of continuity and harmony in a theme is emphasised adn trained through practical exercises.
  4. Project development, 9 credits.
In the course part the vehicle interiors are developed by integration demands of form and function, with regard to materials, fit, and surface texture. User needs is the base for the work. The results of this work are illustrated through sketches as well as a physical and a digital model. This course part is led by an external supervisor in transportation design.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will be able to:

  • develop a vehicle interior that exhibits the integration of form and function, and taking into account the materials, fit and finish.
  • demonstrate familiarity with methods based on user needs
  • visually describe and illustrate where innovations exist.
  • apply basic ergonomic knowledge of a car interior, on the seat comfort, dashboard design and its relation to various human forms.

Required Knowledge

Univ: In order to be admitted to the course, students must have completed a BA in Industrial Design or the equivalent as well as all previous master courses on the Transportation Design Programme at Umeå Institute of Design or the equivalent.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 6.5 and no individual score below 5.5. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum score of 575 and a minimum TWE score of 4.5). TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum score of 90 and a minimum score of 20 on the Writing Section). Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

The course is conducted through independent acquisition of knowledge, lectures, group and individual project work. Details seen in the specific project description which is presented at the beginning of the course. All course elements are compulsory.

Examination modes

Examination of the course is based on the list of products set out in the project description presented at the beginning of the course. This usually includes digital and three-dimensional presentations of project solutions and an oral presentation and a written report based on the students project description and containing relevant research results, used working method, sketches, final results and a conclusion.

To pass the course, students must complete all exercises and mandatory assignments, all of which must be passed. The rating Fail ( U) or Pass (G ) provides a summary of the results of the various elements of the course and are given only when the final presentation has been approved.

Students who do not pass the regular examination can have additional examinations. A student who has failed two tests for a course or part of a class, are entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are special reasons to the contrary (HF Chapter 6. § 22). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.

ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University.  Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance.  Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
