Contents

The course goal is that the student should be able to work independently with different CAID tools (Computer Aided Industrial Design). During the course the students will perform a variety of practical exercises and learn how to create advanced surfaces curvature continuity requirements. Evaluate and assess the curvature continuity requirements trained in the software. The course also brings up how to digitally scan a physical object, and then continues to process form in the basis of computer-based software. The student is trained also in presentation methods as virtual reality, animation and real-time visualisation. Finally, the basics of creating and exporting CAID files are introduced for either milling or free form (rapid prototyping).

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to:

  • work independently with CAID tools in the application of computer-aided design process, from concept drawings to finished prototype.
  • analyse a model and, from there select the relevant modelling approach, and perform surface modelling based on the selected strategy.
  • illuminate and create colours and textures that highlight the shape of the virtual 3D model.
  • visually present their virtual model in various ways; rendered and printed image, motion animation which is rendered and compiled into a movie, real-time presentation on screen or via projector.
  • designing CAID files for milling and free form.
  • scan a real detail for future work in the virtual 3D environment.

Required Knowledge

Univ: In order to be admitted to the course, students must have to be admitted to the master program in in Transportation design (DAITM) and also completed and passed the course CAID-Advanced level, step 1 (5ID117).
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 6.5 and no individual score below 5.5. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum score of 575 and a minimum TWE score of 4.5). TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum score of 90 and a minimum score of 20 on the Writing Section). Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.

Form of instruction

The course consists of lectures and practical exercises under the supervision of tutors. Since teaching is challenging character is all areas of the course mandatory.

Examination modes

Examination of individual practical test, in the presence of the examiner, and the presentation of the results of the allocated tasks. To pass the course, all parts of the course and all tasks has to be performed.
For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.

ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University.  Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance.  Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
