The Research Seminar Series in Philosophy invites you to a seminar with Ethan Nowak, Umeå University, "Speech acts and sociolinguistic variation".

Abstract: In this paper, I develop and defend a speech act theoretic account of a class of intuitively significant properties of expressions associated with what sociolinguists call ‘social meanings’, and I show how my account puts pressure on the widespread idea that the foremost thing we do with words is exchange information.

All interested are welcome to participate in this seminar.
