To advance our understanding of the pathophysiology and develop effective interventions, experimental models are required that closely mimic human biology. In particular, organoid platforms have begun to address key limitations of 2D cell line cultures and animal models in infectious disease research. In this talk, Dr. Pan will present the diverse applications of human organoids in investigating organ-specific infections and disease manifestations across major physiological systems, as well as the applications for antiviral drug discovery. This talk will focus on representative pathogens, including hepatitis E virus, monkeypox virus, Oropouche virus and measles virus. Finally, Dr. Pan will further discuss the innovation of immune-augmented organoids for modelling complex virus-host interactions, better understanding pathophysiology, and developing multi-target therapeutics.

About IBBS:

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major Groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-04T14:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-04T15:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Humlab Talk: Imagining Companionship

This talk explores the cultural, affective, and ethical dimensions of living with companion robots.

<atom:content type="html">
Imagining Companionship: AI, Robots, and the Future of Intimacy in Japan

With: Prof. Hirofumi Katsuno, Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan

Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Japan, this talk explores the cultural, affective, and ethical dimensions of living with companion robots. Prof. Nieves has substantial experience bridging theoretical perspectives on Trustworthy AI with real-world industrial practices, reflecting his focus on socially aware and ethically grounded intelligent systems. AI tools are more embedded in research practices. An AI tool can be used for simple tasks such as revising typos and grammatical errors in a scientific paper or to run a full analysis of scientific datasets. Nevertheless, the use of these tools raises questions about the impact of these AI tools in research practices, e.g., the transparency of research outcomes, the management of scientific datasets in combinations of Agentic AI tools. In this talk, we revise the vision of Trustworthy AI and its principles, as well as highlight the relevance of having clear rules regarding the use of AI tools in research practices.
</atom:content><place>Umeå Marine Sciences Centre, Norrbyn</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-07T14:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-07T15:30:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Medchem Seminar Series - Hanna Wacklin-Knecht

Title: TBA

<atom:content type="html">
Speaker:

Hanna Wacklin-Knecht

Head of Scientific Support Division, European Spallation Source ERIC, Lund

Title:

TBA

More information about the MedChem Seminar Series and the schedule is here.
</atom:content><place>KB.E3.01 (Lilla hörsalen), KBC</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-08T15:15:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-08T16:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

AI: A Workshop on Ethics, Risks and Potential

Explore the challenges of digitalisation, with a particular focus on the ethical aspects, risks, and opportunities associated with AI.

<atom:content type="html">

The development of AI is profoundly affecting both academic disciplines and educational programmes.

<atom:content type="html">
Welcome to a higher seminar!

Speaker
Derwin Chan, professor in the School of Arts and Social Sciences in Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Title
Beyond Programme Evaluation: Understanding the Long-Term Impact of Childhood Sports Competence Training

Abstract
Community health and sports-promotion initiatives are frequently evaluated to determine whether they achieve their intended outcomes. However, the potential of impact assessments to advance theory and generate new scientific knowledge remains underexplored. In particular, we know relatively little about whether, and how, sports competence training during childhood contributes to individuals’ sustained commitment to sports and physical activity in adolescence, adulthood, and beyond.
In this symposium, Prof. Derwin Chan will present findings from a landmark evaluation of Hong Kong’s largest learn-to-swim programme, supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Implemented between 2016 and 2018, the programme delivered 20 swimming lessons to approximately 16,500 primary school students. The evaluation included a pre–post quasi-experimental study of 1,609 participants, followed by a six-year longitudinal follow-up in 2023 involving 346 of these children.
The project addressed important methodological challenges in assessing children’s sports competence, including the development and validation of measures that capture competence meaningfully in a large-scale community setting. More importantly, the longitudinal design provides a rare opportunity to examine the longer-term influence of childhood competence training on adolescents’ engagement in sports and physical activity. Findings demonstrate not only the effectiveness of the programme in developing swimming competence, but also the role of competence, psychological motivation, and social and cultural contexts in shaping sustained participation over time.

The symposium will illustrate how rigorous impact assessment can move beyond accountability and programme evaluation. By linking community-based sports training with long-term behavioural and psychological outcomes, such research can generate new hypotheses, inform theory, and strengthen public-health and sports-promotion strategies aimed at fostering active lives across the lifespan.
Brief Biography of the Speaker:
Prof. Derwin Chan is as a professor in the School of Arts and Social Sciences in Hong Kong Metropolitan University. He is a Chartered Psychologist and a Fellow with the British Psychological Society. Prof. Chan has over 140 publications of peer-reviewed articles related to the psychology of health, sport and exercise, and behavioral medicine. His research primarily focuses on psychosocial, motivational, and social cognitive processes underpinning individuals’ behaviours (e.g., avoidance of unintentional doping, physical activity, healthy diets, safety, and disease prevention). Prof. Chan has been recognised as the leading expert who can provide scientific evaluations on the impact/ effectiveness of large-scale community health programmes. While He is the Editor-in-Chief of Stress and Health, Advisory Editor of Social Science & Medicine, and editorial board member of six other scholarly journals.

Welcome to join us on Zoom
It is also possible to join the seminar via zoom: https://umu.zoom.us/j/65126862074
Welcome!

</atom:content><place>BET.C2.106, Psykologi stora konferensrum</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-10T13:15:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-10T14:30:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Introduction to Canvas(2)

A workshop for you as an employee who is completely new to Canvas

<atom:content type="html">
The workshop is an introductory basic training course and is aimed at you as an employee who is completely new to Canvas, or has just started.

Language: Swedish

Register for the workshop
</atom:content><place>Stora konferensrummet, UPL</place><type>Workshop</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-11T10:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-11T12:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Anniversary Seminar: Stefan Svallfors

The Inner World of Research. Adams, Responsible AI Advisor and Educator

Artificial intelligence is often discussed as a technical disruption, but its most consequential effects are human: on trust, work, voice, belonging, power, and the choices institutions make about whose knowledge matters. In this keynote, I draw from my empirical research, leadership practice, and global work in Responsible AI to explore what it takes to lead technological change without losing sight of the people living inside it.

Through stories and practical reflection, I examine why responsible AI cannot be created through principles or policy alone. It’s an all-too-common assumption that everyone “in here” must be “normal”, and that disabled people, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people, etc., only exist somewhere “out there”; it is then “our” job to learn sufficient tolerance against “them”.

Jeppsson illustrates the problem with both shocking and milder examples from real life. This notion is firmly supported by the finding that defective Treg development and function, caused by mutations in the Foxp3 gene, lead to devastating autoimmune diseases in both mice and humans. However, the molecular mechanisms that establish the epigenetic, transcriptional, and functional identity of Treg cells remain incompletely understood. Although Foxp3 has long been regarded as the master transcription factor of Treg cells, earlier studies suggested that its role in shaping their heterogeneous epigenetic and transcriptional landscapes might be limited or indirect. Our recent findings challenge this view. Using complementary gain- and loss-of-function approaches, we demonstrate that Foxp3 plays a more fundamental and direct role than previously appreciated, integrating cell-intrinsic states and environmental contexts to drive epigenetic and transcriptional programs that define Treg cell identity and function. Acting as a master yet context-dependent regulator, Foxp3 cooperates with signal-dependent transcription factors, including BATF, to coordinate the epigenetic and transcriptional programs underlying Treg cell identity and function.

About IBSS

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-09-25T14:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-09-25T15:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Meet Umeå University in Washington, DC

Meet Umeå University in Washington, DC and get closer to your future. Altered DNA methylation, an epigenetic modification that regulates gene expression, is well documented in Alzheimer’s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in ageing. Yet, investigations on the contributions of DNA methylation to dysregulation of specific brain cell types remain limited. In recent years, the Bettencourt lab has been investigating the role of DNA methylation on the dysregulation of oligodendrocyte and myelin-related genes across neurodegenerative diseases, and how these changes may impact gene expression. Our DNA methylomic studies cover a range of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementias, Parkinson’s disease and multiples system atrophy. Our findings suggest that oligodendrocyte-associated DNA methylation changes occur early across neurodegenerative diseases.

About IBSS:

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major Groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-10-02T14:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-10-02T15:00:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Nordic Collegiate Programming Contest (NCPC) 2026

Compete in the Swedish Programming Championship on October 4. Well-designed parental leave policies can support greater father involvement, yet the pace of change toward shared caregiving differs considerably both between and within countries.

Workplace contexts can constrain or incentivise leave-taking through normative pressures, organisational policies, and concerns over job security or career development. Our study examines reciprocal influences: not only how workplace contexts shape fathers' choices, but also how fathers' leave-taking behaviour may reshape workplace norms. For example, when high-skilled fathers leverage their bargaining power to take leave, their actions may normalise such behaviour among peers, potentially triggering broader organisational change. The aim is to identify local tipping points where shifts in group behaviour and norms occur.

And some notes from Satu about the plan for the talk:
I begin the presentation with a brief introduction to selected Markovian models. I then present first results from our study, which applies a feedback-augmented non-homogeneous hidden Markov model to Finnish full-population administrative register data with employer–employee linkages. This approach allows us to quantify how previous fathers' leave choices reshape workplace contexts, thereby influencing subsequent fathers' decisions. In doing so, we map a dynamic, two-way process of adaptation between fathers and their workplaces.

All interested are welcome to participate in CEDAR seminars. The seminars are held online via Zoom. Beyond vision, light influences a wide range of physiological and behavioural processes through non-visual pathways via the eye, including sleep–wake regulation, circadian rhythms, cognitive performance, mood, and metabolic function. However, many fundamental questions remain unanswered. We still do not know the optimal dose, timing, duration, or spectral composition of light exposure required to promote different health outcomes, nor do we fully understand the mechanisms linking acute and chronic light exposure to physical and mental health beyond circadian regulation.
A major challenge is to account for the substantial inter-individual variability in responses to light. Factors such as age, sex, chronotype, genetics, skin pigmentation, pre-existing health conditions, occupation, and geographical location all influence how individuals respond to light exposure.
This presentation will summarize some aspects of the current state of knowledge, highlight key research gaps, and provide examples of how emerging evidence is being translated into practical applications.

About IBSS

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major Groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-11-13T14:00:00+01:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-11-13T15:00:00+01:00</slutdatum>

Light and Organic Matter Effects on Mixotrophy in the Baltic

An assessment of their roles in shaping heterotrophic microbial production strategies.

<atom:content type="html">
Isolde Puts is a researcher at University of Oslo.

The Baltic Sea has received increasing inputs of coloured dissolved organic matter (cDOM) over recent decades. We welcome everyone interested in engaging in research and collaboration for sustainable transformation, as we gather around the theme; Beyond the Backlash: Sustainability for the Future

We are facing growing global challenges, including geopolitical tensions, war, forced migration, climate change, and increasing populism. At the same time, global institutions are weakening and progress towards the sustainable development goals remains insufficient, making the search for paths towards sustainable futures more urgent than ever.

This conference is an opportunity for researchers and policymakers to explore how sustainability can be advanced locally, globally, and translocally despite the polycrisis. Through dialogue, collaboration, and critical reflection, we will examine how knowledge, innovation, and collective action can guide research on and for transformation in turbulent times.

Take the opportunity to meet colleagues across universities and sectors, engage in critical dialogue, and develop collaborations to address major societal challenges of our time.

This conference is organised jointly with Linköping University. Participation is therefore possible on site at Umeå University and at Linköping University.

Read more about the conference: Beyond the Backlash: Sustainability for the Future – Conference, 26 November 2026
</atom:content><place>Vardagsrummet</place><type>Conference</type>
<startdatum>2026-11-26T08:15:00+01:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-11-27T16:30:00+01:00</slutdatum>

SSIBS seminar: Shahriar Mobashery

Shahriar Mobashery, Notre Damme University, US, lectures within the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Seminars.

<atom:content type="html">
Repair Mechanism of Damaged Cell Wall as Target in Antibacterial Strategies

Speaker: Shahriar Mobashery, Notre Damme University, US

Host: Felipe Cava, Department of Molecular Biology, MIMS

About the lecture:

TBA

About IBSS:

Integrated Biomedical Science Seminars is a broad, open seminar series within life science.
</atom:content><place>Major Groove</place><type>Seminar</type>
<startdatum>2026-11-27T14:00:00+01:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-11-27T15:00:00+01:00</slutdatum>

Meet Umeå University at the Study in Sweden Online Fair

Meet Umeå University at the Study in Sweden Online Fair and get closer to your future. Together, we will discuss how these signals may influence students’ motivation, confidence, and learning. What are we really looking for when we require students to express ideas in their own words in an assignment, or to demonstrate independence in a degree project? And how can we design assessments that genuinely evaluate what we intend to assess?

This workshop is a workshop in the truest sense of the word: we experience, reflect, and try again. We do not offer ready-made answers, but we do offer engaging questions that help us think more deeply and become wiser together.

AI for Learning

This workshop is part of the AI for Learning initiative at Umeå University.
