Not in the sense that they are supernatural or worshipped, but in the sense that, like all gods, they personify the accumulated power of society over the individual, the past over the present: Just like the primordial totemic gods synthesized the mana of the tribe into a unified agency, today’s AI systems synthesize data into what is experienced as an extra-human force. In his forthcoming book, philosopher and AI ethicist Carl Öhman elaborates on technical symmetry between AI systems and divinity, but also shows how the ancient tradition of religious critique can help us understand the spiritual dangers posed by our “new” systems. By applying the religious philosophy of thinkers such as Freud, Marx, and Nietzsche to burgeoning AI applications like parenting coaches, romantic matchmakers, and political chatbots, Öhman explores how modern AI systems cultivate a new form of spiritual corruption: Like immaculate gods, AI can improve our lives in countless ways, but only at a profound cost—they may no longer be our lives. BioCarl Öhman is an associate professor of political science at Uppsala University, Sweden. His research focuses on AI and social/political theory, but also draws on anthropology, comparative literature, and media studies. For more than 20 years, SHARE has collected longitudinal data on health, socio-economic status and social and family networks from over 175,000 respondents in 28 countries. The tenth wave of data will be released early next year, opening new prospects for research on ageing in Europe. SHARE is a major pillar of the European Research Area and was the first ever European Research Infrastructure Consortium (SHARE-ERIC).<h3>About the workshop</h3>This workshop brings together researchers, data users and others with an interest in SHARE to learn about recent developments in the project and see how its data are being put to use. The title of the talk is "Buried Stories – What stories can SEAD data tell us?".<h2>Abstract</h2>In this inspirational lecture, held at Umeå University, and on Zoom Bruno Castellano Mengibar will introduce the SEAD Buried Stories project, and explain how and why it was developed.Buried Stories is a public-facing web application that reinterprets data in the Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD), as a set of narrative experiences aimed at people with no archaeology background. With most databases the barrier for non-specialist users is not the data’s complexity but its presentation.Therefore, this web app was designed to appeal to general audiences. SEAD was developed as a research infrastructure intended for researchers and specialists to explore the data with specific research questions already in mind. However, within the same records, one can find stories that a non-specialist would find interesting.The initial project inspiration came from Figure 3c of Buckland et al. (2018), which highlights likely paths for the spread of the flightless weevil over time. This figure inspired an Exploratory Data Analysis EDA looking for other potential datasets with storytelling potential. The result is eight self-contained stories, grouped into three thematic hubs:·       Six-Legged Sagas (living creatures/taxa related stories)·       Clay Chronicles (stories with ceramics data)·       Timber Tales (dendrochronology data).Each hub is framed as a thread to pull rather than a dataset to interrogate. Every story is built entirely from records within SEAD’s Database.The stories are constructed via a Python pipeline, which queries the SEAD staging database. From that point, static data is written so that the interface can be built with Next.js to read the JSON directly. The published site holds no database credentials itself, yet the data it shows is always a traceable, versioned snapshot. Because SEAD stores no imagery of its own, photographs of species and sites were resolved at export time from GBIF and Wikimedia and carry a visible license and creator credit alongside every image.<h2>About the speaker</h2>Bruno Castellano Mengibar developed the Buried Stories project during an internship with SEAD, as part of Arbetsförmedlingens program, Korta Vägen. Early dates for iron production and evidence for several stages of the technological chaîne opératoire demonstrate extensive knowledge of iron and steel production, with recently expanded analyses revealing both striking similarities and regional variation in metallurgical practices.These results raise new questions about how such complex technological knowledge was transmitted, incorporated into existing practices and lifeways, and maintained over time. This is the core question motivating an ongoing research project which engages with the last decade’s tendency of municipal sales of care, education and childcare buildings to private actors.  The purpose is to conceptually develop economic and urban geographical perspectives on privatization and re-municipalization with the theoretical lenses of municipal governance and social reproduction and to contribute to the geographic research field with novel knowledge on the public ownership of property and the privatization thereof. The project aims to examine privatization, re-municipalization and municipal governance of community service properties in Sweden during the period 2013-2025. Community service properties are defined (by MSCI) as buildings that are used for publicly financed operations and services – such as schools, care homes, cultural buildings, prisons, and city halls. This presentation will present our current work with data collection that will form the basis for a transaction and geographical analyses. These investigations aim to study the privatization and re-municipalization of community service properties and to explore the geographies of these transactions. This is due to a lack of understanding of both the wide variety of structures/textures that can be produced by the technique and an insufficient understanding of the worldwide corpus. This presentation will take a look at some of the significant variety of nalbinding found in archaeological contexts in Scandinavia. It will also touch on surface texture confusions with other techniques and common issues with documentation.   Looped textiles require a different protocol than woven textiles. The weave structure of cloth is often studied entirely separately from its subsequent construction into clothing. That division is not effective for looped textiles as the construction of the final artifact is an inherent part of the construction of the fabric itself. Understanding the effects of the construction details can be particularly useful when attempting to determine which technique produced the structure of an archaeological artifact as there are some structures that can be produced by more than one technique.   Too often the only information recorded for nalbound artifacts are type of object, location found, approximate dating, rough size, possibly material type, and that it is nalbound or some looped technique. In the vast majority of cases there is no indication as to which stitch or stitch family or even if it was a simple or compound variant noted. Other additional details that are useful for future researchers are at what gauge it was worked (a basic stitch/row count), yarn structure (single/plied, S/Z), and any construction details noted. Without these details, no comparisons can be made and any understanding of the artifact’s place in the broader corpus is limited. Genomes are pervasively transcribed into more non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) than protein-coding RNAs. Moreover, new pharmacological opportunities are emerging to treat human diseases via modulation of ncRNA functions, either by targeting ncRNAs with small molecules or by using ncRNAs as drug vectors. But while we have a deep knowledge of protein structure, function, and dynamics and can accurately predict protein 3D structures from sequence using artificial intelligence, our mechanistic understanding of ncRNAs is still critically limited. My group contributes to fill this knowledge gap by applying RNA biochemistry, structural, cellular and molecular biology to the characterization of catalytic and regulatory bacterial and eukaryotic ncRNAs. In my talk, I will first show how we have elucidated the molecular mechanism of splicing through enzymatic, crystallographic and computational studies on a bacterial spliceosome ancestor, called the group II intron. I will then explain the implications of our group II intron work on understanding eukaryotic splicing and on developing gene-specific and RNA-directed drugs to treat cancer, congenital syndromes and infections. Finally, I will conclude by describing how our studies of splicing machineries enabled us to develop the experimental toolkit for pioneering the characterization of a newly-discovered class of regulatory ncRNAs, the so-called long non-coding RNAs. These latter molecules are key regulators of eukaryotic gene expression, and we have succeeded in dissecting the structure-functional complexity of prototypical lncRNAs through an interdisciplinary evolutionary, cellular, and structural approach, including by imaging them in 3D for the first time. The process involves chemical signaling, which will be a subject of my presentation.A primary mechanism for this sensing and signalling involves the events of cell-wall recycling. The cell wall is degraded for recycling and then the cell wall is synthesized de novo for the repair function. The recycling events get initiated by the functions of a family of 11 lytic transglycosylases in P. aeruginosa, which generate the signalling factors that influence transcriptional events in the cytoplasm. However, the quality and interpretative value of these remains depend on decisions made throughout the archaeological process—from initial excavation and sampling strategies through specialist analysis, reporting, integration, curation, and publication.This presentation explores best practice in palaeoenvironmental archaeology, focusing on the journey from the recovery of environmental remains to the synthesis of results within wider archaeological interpretations. The talk will detail the Palaeo-environmental Sampling Guidelines in use in Ireland and how different types of palaeoenvironmental evidence are preserved, how appropriate sampling strategies and sample sizes are determined, and the importance of effective recovery, storage and processing methods.The role of specialist analysis and reporting will be discussed, including the integration of palaeoenvironmental results into final excavation reports and broader research frameworks. The presentation will also consider the temporary curation of environmental remains, submission requirements to the National Museum of Ireland and the importance of publication in ensuring that palaeoenvironmental datasets contribute to long-term archaeological research.Drawing on case studies from Irish archaeological excavations, the presentation will highlight the challenges and opportunities associated with recovering and interpreting environmental evidence. Karin Örmon is an Associate Professor in Nursing currently at the Blekinge Institute of Technology, and from mid-August 2026 at Kristianstad University. She is also Head of Research at the Västra Götaland Region Competence Centre on Intimate Partner Violence in Gothenburg. Her research focuses on intimate partner violence, intimate partner homicide, women’s health, and trauma-informed practices in health and social care. It adopts a qualitative and interdisciplinary approach, with the overall aim of strengthening professional responses and improving outcomes for individuals exposed to violence. Another area of her research is time geography. A central methodological component of this approach is the time-geographical life chart, in which an individual’s life is visualized along a timeline in relation to geographical movements and significant life events. The life chart is developed collaboratively with participants, using geographical relocations as anchors to structure autobiographical memories. Through this process, social events and stressful experiences are identified and integrated, resulting in a coherent and structured representation of the life course. For the first time, light and electron microscopy have molecular sensitivity and resolving power in situ, and, if used together, can connect structural detail with molecular dynamics of the whole cell. Aided by machine learning driven image analysis powered by open sharing of image data, this provides unprecedented opportunities for new insights into the molecular mechanisms that drive life’s core functions at the scale of the cell.I will present the progress we have made to study one of life’s most fundamental functions, cell division, by mapping the dynamic protein network, assembly of individual protein complexes and genome re-folding that drive it. Our work has studied cell division in human cancer cells and early mammalian embryos using advanced cross-scale imaging methods, including light-sheet, quantitative fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS)-calibrated, super-resolution and correlative light and electron microscopy. The quantitative integrated molecular data that these new technologies deliver, allow us to better understand how the molecular machinery functions in space and time to ensure faithful cell division and prevent the errors that underlie congenital disease, infertility and cancer.<h2>More about Jan Ellenberg:</h2>Jan Ellenberg has been Director of SciLifeLab, Sweden's national research center for molecular biosciences, since 2024. He is also Professor of Cell Biology and Biophysics at Karolinska Institutet and affiliated Professor at Stockholm University and KTH. His research focuses on cell division and the organization of the cell nucleus. Recently, he received support from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation to launch Alpha Cell, a strategic research programme at SciLifeLab that aims to create a virtual human cell using imaging-based molecular mapping and AI.Before joining Karolinska Institutet, Jan Ellenberg conducted pioneering cell biology research at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany.
