Economic Intelligence and Information dissemination: the State, Business and East Economic Bureau during the Cold War.

Research project The Cold War’s economic intelligence is less studied than its military counterpart. This project explores secret Business-State cooperation in Sweden after 1943, which led to the foundation of the East Economic Bureau in 1959.

Towards the end of World War II, secret cooperation developed in Sweden between the Defence Staff and Business. This aimed at investigating the War economic potential of the belligerent countries. During the early 1950s, an incremental turn was made, leading to a focus solely on the emerging planned economies. This project therefore wants to contribute to the existing economic-historical and security political research by providing knowledge on how the Defence Staff and business cooperated with economic intelligence activities through the East Economic Bureau, which in fact was more or less unknown until 1973.
