It asks how we got here, what stories have shaped the development of AI and where we might go next.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with invited speakers, including initial reflections, a moderated conversation and audience Q&A.

Programme

18:30 Doors open
19:00 Film starts
20:30 Film ends and panel discussion begins.

The event ends no later than 21:30.

Read more on AI Policy Lab's website.
</atom:content><place>Curiosum</place><type>Other</type>
<startdatum>2026-06-01T19:00:00+02:00</startdatum><slutdatum>2026-06-01T21:30:00+02:00</slutdatum>

Humlab Talk: Imagining Companionship

This talk explores the cultural, affective, and ethical dimensions of living with companion robots.

<atom:content type="html">
Imagining Companionship: AI, Robots, and the Future of Intimacy in Japan

With: Prof. Hirofumi Katsuno, Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan

Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Japan, this talk explores the cultural, affective, and ethical dimensions of living with companion robots. Drawing on cases from Japan's emerging companion robot market, I examine how human-robot intimacy is imagined, practiced, and contested across different social contexts. In doing so, I consider what approaches to AI/robot companionship emerging from Japan might contribute to broader cross-cultural conversations on the future of human-machine relations.

Hirofumi Katsuno is Professor of Anthropology and Media Studies at Doshisha University in Kyoto. His research investigates how people engage with emerging media and robotic technologies, and how these interactions shape imagination, agency, and a sense of presence in everyday life.
