Information for students, faculty and staff regarding COVID-19. (Updated: 17 September 2020)
The idea of Shut Up and Write! (SUAW) is to meet somewhere informal, such as a café, and write together for 25-minute sprints (the Pomodoro Technique) followed by 5 minute breaks. The break is a great chance to chat and changes academic writing (sometimes a solitary experience) into a social activity (and no one will ever actually tell anyone to "shut up"!).
Shut Up and Write! will start again for the autumn on Wednesday 4 September 2019 from 8:00-10:00 (and every Wednesday) in Café Lindell beside the library. We usually sit on the side nearest the Humanities building and will have a small sign. Don’t worry if you can’t be there at 8:00 exactly; feel free to come and join in any time until 10:00. It’s a very casual and friendly atmosphere.
I’ll also be starting a weekly Friday session from 6 September in autumn from 9:00-11:00 in the Humanities staffroom for anyone who can’t make Wednesday or would like to come to both.
It can be a nice change from your office and you’ll be surprised how much you can get done in two hours working in this group environment.
All members of staff and postgraduate students from any discipline are welcome, but SUAW can be particularly helpful for PhDs, postdocs, and those in the humanities (who can find themselves working alone). It's ideal for those of us who struggle with procrastination! It is also a great opportunity to meet people outside your discipline and for those new to Umeå.
Come and try it out if you think this is something that interests you. Feel free to contact me at email@example.com if you have any questions or would like to be put on the mailing list.
