Project MUSE

Umeå University researchers can publish open access based on the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model in several Project MUSE journals. Read more about the terms of our agreement with the publisher for 2025 and what it means for you here.

The library subscribes to the Project MUSE Standard Collection database, which contains approximately 380 journals from various humanities and social sciences publishers. In 2025, about 100 of the database's journals will be openly accessible under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model.

Articles published in 2025 will remain open access even if the journal reverts to being a subscription journal in 2026. This applies to all researchers affiliated with subscribing institutions.

More about Subscribe to Open

Subscribe to Open (S2O) is a model for funding open access to scientific journals. This model works by publishers converting their subscription journals into open access journals for one year at a time. If enough subscribers renew their subscriptions, all or a selection of journals are made freely available without article processing charges (APCs) for one year to all.
