What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI-based systems can be embedded in hardware devices - you've probably seen robots in industry, mining and agriculture. AI is also found in autonomous vehicles such as drones, self-driving buses, vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers and is developing rapidly in healthcare

AI-based systems can also be software-based and, for example, be built into our smartphones, where AI calculates how many steps we take or answer questions. Many companies and organizations also use AI to optimally market themselves for your online searches or direct information to you, based on the cookies you have accepted. Other examples where AI is used are voice assistance, speech and face recognition and image analysis.

Almost 100 Researchers and Teachers

At Umeå University, research and education in AI has been conducted since the 1970s. Today, close to 100 researchers and teachers work in the field of AI and they are found at all faculties - medicine, science, social sciences and humanities.

Right now, our researchers are looking at, among other things, how to develop the technology and make it better, more efficient and reliable. We also examine how to ensure that AI technology and systems follow laws, ethical guidelines and can be explained. At the same time, we study how the development towards digitalisation and AI affects politics, education, legislation, working life and the media. And what do the changes mean purely historically, linguistically and culturally?

Large, National Research Programs

In order to provide society and our students and professionals with the required knowledge, a large and faculty-wide investment in AI has been initiated. The goal for the next ten years is that AI runs as a common thread through all our fields of science.

Umeå University participates in the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program, WASP, the largest national research program ever funded by a private research foundation with the goal of bringing Sweden as a country to a leading role in AI.

Umeå University also hosts and coordinates the national research program The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program - Humanities and Society, WASP-HS.

Network for those who are interested in AI

The vision is to achieve increased knowledge about opportunities and challenges with AI and autonomous systems based on excellent research in the humanities and social sciences.

Umeå University is building a network of researchers, teachers, students and professionals who want to learn, discuss and collaborate on AI-related issues. UmeAI Network includes seminars, panel discussions, courses and other activities. Warmly welcome to participate!
