My research interests are interactions between soil, plants and water in boreal forests.

In my PhD project I will investigate the connections between riparian zones and streams. The landscapes surrounding boreal lakes and streams contribute most of the organic matter flowing through the aquatic ecosystem. Our understanding of the supply of these organic resources to streams is largely built on aboveground inputs, but relatively little is known about belowground inputs and the connections between land and water. The focus of my PhD is to determine the belowground biogeochemical connections between boreal forests and streams, particularly in the riparian zone. Part of my work will investigate how the carbon shunted belowground by trees influences stream chemistry using the novel method of stem compression.
