I am primary school teacher and also a special needs teacher and I have worked in elementary school, especially in grades 7-9, for fifteen years. Since autumn 2015, I am a PhD student at the Department of Education and writing a doctoral dissertation in special education. I am employed by Skellefteå municipality in a project entitled "Preventing and detecting social exclusion", and my dissertation is about the students that the school is struggling to meet within the ordinary education. The school's assignment is basically inclusive, pupils in need of support should generally receive that in class they normally belong to, but if there are special reasons (Education Act 3 chap. 11§), students may be placed in a special education group for support. My research interest concerns that specific education group and how the school's assignment for inclusion are negotiated when students in need of special support are placed in another group than the one they normally belong to in order to receive support. The collected data consists of document studies (action programs), but also of interviews with school staff and students. The dissertation is scheduled for completion in autumn 2020.
