IKEA FÖNSTÅ - Mental Well-Being at Home

Degree Project 2021

In today’s globalized society, people are not bound to live in one place for the majority of their life anymore. Especially generation Y is becoming increasingly flexible when it comes to work and education choices. People move more often than in the past and leave their social environment and family behind.

This mobile lifestyle has affected both daily lives as well as personal well-being. Social bonds and support become more loose and people often end up being left alone with their problems.

One of the significant and common problems are isolation and loneliness among these people.

In my thesis, I have been exploring ''HMW improve the mental well-being of people who live alone abroad and give them a better home feeling?''

IKEA FÖNSTÅ | Mental Well-being at Home

With this digital board, you can send handwritten messages or pictures to your loved ones that they can see when they arrive home. You can even encounter them on the board.

The design will take place in the hallway of your home. According to my research, the moment you enter the house is the moment when you feel your loneliness most, imagine this is repeating every day.

Instead of seeing an empty room every time you enter the house and remembering how lonely you are, it now turns into the moment you look forward to, where you can see handwritten messages, doodles and pictures from your loved ones.

This creates belonging, presence and gives you a smile every time you arrive home thus helps you to deal with loneliness and have a positive impact on your mental well-being.

It is also a piece of furniture where you can hang or store your belongings while writing or reading your messages, and create your personal space according to your rituals.
