At Umeå Marine Sciences Centre (UMF), we have taxonomists specialised in phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthic animals.
In taxonomy, organisms are identified, described, named and classified. The occurrence and spread of animals and plants can say a great deal about the state of the marine environment. Being able to identify different species is therefore an important part of environmental monitoring.
