Umeå Marine Sciences Centre's research vessel R/V Botnica is available for coastal sampling and expeditions throughout the Gulf of Bothnia.
The vessel is 23 meters long, 5 meters wide and has a depth of 1.5 meters. The maximum speed is 14 knots. To better withstand ice, it is equipped with an extra thick hull in corten steel. On board there is space for 12 passengers plus a crew of two persons.
There is also the possibility of transporting a smaller boat on board if needed.
Safety on board
The captain is responsible for the safety on board. This means, among other things, that the captain may decide to terminate expeditions for safety reasons. The crew of R/V Botnica participate regularly in safety exercises. Prior to each expedition, the captain informs expedition members about security regulations and routines on board.
The captain decides when to wear life jackets, and when the life jackets are to be attached to the ship with safety lines. In all crane work on board R/V Botnica, safety shoes and helmets should be worn.
Umeå Marine Sciences Centre follows the Transport Agency's regulations on safety and crew.
