Postdoctoral fellowship (2 years) in structural biology with focus on bacterial protein transport

Project description

The research project in which the postdoctoral fellow will be engaged involves structure and function of bacterial proteins in a pathway that transfers certain proteins from the inner membrane to the outer of Gram-negative bacteria. The studied targets represent both soluble proteins and membrane bound complexes. The selected proteins are represented by bacteria from different phyla, such as proteobacteria and bacteroidetes. The present study will be performed using a blend of X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, molecular biology, as well as biochemical and biophysical approaches. The fellowship, financed by the Carl Trygger Foundations, is for two years starting at the earliest possible time point as agreed. The stipend is 288 000 SEK per year tax-exempt.


The required qualification is a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent in structural biology, biochemistry or in an equivalent field, relevant for structural and functional characterization of proteins. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions or similar circumstances.

The candidate must be able to carry out and plan scientific research independently but also in close collaboration with other members of the team, independence and good ability to collaborate are therefore requirements. A good knowledge of English, both written and spoken is also required. The candidate must also have knowledge in protein biochemistry and extensive laboratory experience of molecular and biochemical methods. Experience in purification of membrane proteins is a strong merit.
