The Department of Law is expansive and currently has close to sixty employees. The department is responsible for the law program and individual legal courses, and also participates in several other academic programs. For more detailed information, see our website: here .

The Department of Law hereby advertises a full-time doctoral student position to conduct doctoral studies in law. The starting date for the position is August 1, 2019 or upon agreement. We particularly like to see applications related to one or several of the department’s research themes, see here.

The Department of Law will be filling a number of doctoral student positions during the spring here. We encourage interested applicants to apply for multiple positions.

Doctoral studies are equivalent to four years of full-time studies (240 ECTS credits). A doctoral student may teach or do other work within the department, up to a maximum of twenty percent of the total working time. If so, the period of employment is extended accordingly to guarantee four years of study time. Requirements and Qualifications

The general requirement for admission to doctoral studies is that the applicant has an advanced level degree and a minimum of 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at an advanced level. In addition, the special requirement for admission to doctoral studies in law is that the applicant has completed a law program and obtained a Swedish law degree (“juristexamen/juris kandidatexamen”) or a comparable degree. The application can be supplemented with degree certificate after the final day of application. The special admission requirement can also be met by invoking other education, training, or professional experience, if it is deemed to provide an expertise in the specific doctoral research subject, comparable to a legal degree in terms both of knowledge of the specific doctoral research subject and of general legal knowledge relevant for that subject. Those who completed a university education of 120 credits (equivalent to 180 ECTS credits) before July 1, 2007 and meet the special admission requirement are also eligible.

Eligible applicants will be assessed based on their ability to complete the doctoral studies. An applicant’s ability to complete the doctoral studies will be assessed based on the applicant’s general qualifications, as evidenced by educational background, the quality of independent research, and other relevant qualifications, and on the scientific quality of the research plan.

The salary follows Umeå University’s so-called doctoral ladder. According to chapter 12, sec. 2 of the Act on Higher Education (“Högskoleförordningen”) the employment decision is not subject to appeal.
