The Department of Physics at the Umeå University is looking for a PhD candidate in experimental physics for a project aimed at “Time-resolving dynamics in strongly coupled systems”. Application deadline is November 30th, 2020.

Project Description
The selected candidate will work within the research project ”Plasmon-exciton coupling at the attosecond-sub-nanometer scale,” in the RElativistic Attosecond physics Laboratory (REAL, https://www.realumu.org/). In the ultrastrong strong coupling regime light and matter intermix and form new quasi-particles, which are called polaritons. These have hybrid electronic and optical properties offering a broad range of applications. Ultrafast oscillation between the two states of polaritons and related dynamical processes are on the few femtosecond time scale and below.

In the actual research, the femtosecond to attosecond dynamics of specific polaritonic systems [1] will be investigated and the necessary experimental setup will be constructed utilizing the lab’s unique infrastructure including two sub-5 fs laser systems and attosecond XUV pulses [2].

Competence requirements
To be admitted for studies at third-cycle level you are required to have completed a second-cycle level degree in physics, engineering physics, or engineering, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level. The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen). A master degree (or equivalent), experience in experimental laboratory research, including optics, electronics, LabVIEW, MATLAB, lasers and plasma physics will be seen as an advantage. The candidate must be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently as well as a part of the research group. The applicant is required to be fluent in both oral and written English.

Terms of employment
The position is a full-time employment that extends up to four years. If part-time teaching (max 20%) is offered, then the period of employment can be extended up to five years. The salary is fixed according to the established salary level for doctoral students. The position will open in January 2021 (exact start date can be negotiated).
