Vaartoe - Centre for Sami Research co-ordinates and initiates research in and on Sápmi, the Sami country, focusing on the cultures, societies, histories and languages of Sami and other Indigenous peoples. Vaartoe is a hub for PhD students and researchers from different disciplines at Umeå University and an arena for collaboration with Sami partners and organizations.

Two positions are open for postdoctoral researchers to develop Sami and/or Indigenous Research at Vaartoe and Umeå university.
Vaartoe is building its research environment around four cross-disciplinary thematic areas:
• Health and living conditions
• Culture and history
• Land and water
• Language and education
The positions will be tied to one of these areas as a means to strengthening the research groups and develop Sami and Indigenous Research at Umeå University.
The tasks consist mainly of own research. Teaching may also occur, up to 20% (according to the central agreement).
We are looking for applicants with PhD in an area of relevance for the planned project or a foreign degree equivalent to such PhD. A precondition is that the applicant has not previously been employed as a postdoc at Umeå University for more than a year within the same or equivalent discipline.
The degree must be completed no more than three years before the closing date of the application unless special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade union organizations or similar circumstances.
Applicants must demonstrate documented independent research work and skills in writing scientific articles and reports in Swedish and/or English. Good communication skills in Swedish and/or English are a requirement.
Prior work in Sami and Indigenous research is considered a merit, as is a track record of research done in collaboration with Indigenous partners. For all employment at Vaartoe, Sami linguistic and cultural skills are considered a merit.
Candidates who do not have a background in Indigenous research shall clearly describe how their background and previous research experiences are relevant to the planned project in Sami/ Indigenous research.
A reasoned approach to research ethics in Indigenous research is required.
The scientific merits of candidates will be considered of primary importance in the evaluation, followed by the quality and feasibility of research plans.

• A cover letter including your reasons for applying for the position and a statement on the contribution you will make to Sami and Indigenous Research at Vaartoe and Umeå University
• A brief summary of your research experience (max two A4 pages)
• A research plan for the postdoctoral period (max 10 pages), where you describe your planned work in the field including a time plan and a publication plan. Ethical aspects of the proposed project must be addressed in the research plan
• A CV including certified copies of PhD certificate and other relevant documentation
• A list of publications
• Contact information of two to three reference persons
