Focus is on math education.

Lecture with Ilana Seidel Horn, Vanderbilt University.

Abstract

Decades of research has demonstrated that good mathematics teaching builds on children’s thinking to help them understand core disciplinary ideas and practices. Hundreds of books have been published advising teachers about how to approach instruction in this way, and yet, classrooms often fall short of these ideals. In this talk, I look at institutional, cultural, and conceptual obstacles to making high quality math teaching commonplace in classrooms, from an American perspective. After considering how each of these contribute to the preservation of the status quo, I offer a way of looking at these challenges as a problem of teacher learning. I conclude by offering principles for the design of professional learning activities that can support meaningful instructional change.

Hans Wallin lectures
Hans Wallin lectures are a recurring seminar series that aims to create communication and debate across subject boundaries and groupings, such as various research groups, teacher educators, student teachers, and practicing teachers and principals.

The lecture is a part of the Hans Wallin Lecture series. Focus on methods for studying teacher learning.

Lecture with Ilana Seidel Horn, Vanderbilt University.

Abstract

Responsive instruction requires teachers to act while attending to multiple social and relational dimensions of classroom life. This poses a technical challenge when supporting teachers’ in making sense of these multiple dimensions because opportunities to reflect on instruction typically happen outside of instruction itself. Video and lesson artifacts help, to some extent, to prompt teacher thinking after the fact, but these tools provide only a partial view of teacher thinking. In this presentation, I offer a new technology, designed by my research team, which supports teachers’ reflection on their practices across multiple dimensions of space and time. This technology, called the Interaction Geography Slicer (IGS), provides a visualization which brings about a more embodied recollection than standard methods and a deeper, more nuanced account of teacher reflection practices.

Hans Wallin lecture

Hans Wallin lectures are a recurring seminar series that aims to create communication and debate across subject boundaries and groupings, such as various research groups, teacher educators, student teachers, and practicing teachers and principals.

The lecture is a part of the Hans Wallin Lecture series.
