Postdoctoral scholarship (2 years) within polymer synthesis for separation and energy applications

The Department of Chemistry is offering a postdoctoral scholarship within the project focused on synthesizing polymers for separation and energy applications. The postdoctoral project involves the synthesis of homo- and block-copolymers tailored for use in separation and energy applications. The scholarship is full-time for two years with access according to mutual agreement. Last day to apply is 6 May 2024.

Project description

Our research group strives to design and synthesize innovative materials that will shape the future of separation science. In this particular project, we are dedicated to synthesizing both homo-polymers and block copolymers, each meticulously tailored to possess unique properties perfectly suited for specific applications. The project represents a true intersection of various disciplines, offering you the opportunity to actively participate in the design and synthesis of polymers intended for cutting-edge separation and energy-related applications. Your contributions will play a crucial role in advancing our understanding and development of these materials, making a tangible impact on the field of separation science.

The stipend is tax-free and is founded by Kempe Foundations. The amount is 350 000 SEK/year.

Qualifications

To qualify as a postdoctoral scholarship holder, the postdoctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirements must be fulfilled no later than at the time of the decision about scholarship recipient.

Priority should be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree, according to what is stipulated in the paragraph above, no later than three years prior. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree prior to that may also be eligible. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, appointments of trust in trade union organizations, military service, or similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or other forms of appointment/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Doctoral degree should be within the field of polymer chemistry, chemical engineering or equivalent.

Additional requirements are:

  • Experience in one of the following polymerization methods:
    1. Anionic polymerization,
    2. Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP),
    3. Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization (RAFT).

Meriting criteria are:

A documented good ability to conduct research and present it in writing in the form of scientific publications in expert-reviewed journals. A desire to conduct research in a multidisciplinary project and in an environment that promotes collaboration between people with different skills.

We are looking for candidates who  are highly motivated. It is important that you are creative and have the ability and interest to co-operate with other team members. It is required that you have excellent oral and written knowledge of English.

Application

A full application should include:

  • A cover letter summarizing how your previous research aligns with the advertised scholarship, with a specific focus on your polymer synthesis skills. Your qualifications, your scientific interests, your motives for applying, and how you feel you meet the essential and meriting criteria (max 2 pages),
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with publication list,
  • Copy of doctoral degree certificate or documentation that clarifies when the degree of doctor is expected to be obtained,
  • Copies of other diplomas, list of completed academic courses and grades,
  • Copy of doctoral thesis and up to 5 relevant articles,
  • Other documents that the applicant wishes to claim.
  • Contact information to three persons willing to act as references.

Submit your application as a PDF marked with the reference number FS 2.1.6-773-24, both in the file name and in the subject field of the email, to medel@diarie.umu.se. The application can be written in English (preferably) or Swedish. Application deadline is 6 May 2024.
