Postdoctoral scholarship (2 years) within mass spectrometry
The Department of Chemistry is offering a postdoctoral scholarship within “Identification of Biomarkers Using Mass Spectrometry for the Diagnosis of Hyperemesis Gravidarum”. The scholarship is full-time for two years with access 1 September, 2024 or by agreement. Last day to apply is 24 May 2024.
Project description
Recent findings have shown that elevated levels of Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF-15) and increased susceptibility to it play pivotal roles in Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), resulting in severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. In this research project, mass spectrometry methods for quantitative measurements of GDF-15 will be developed and validated, alongside the development of proteomics protocols for identification of HG biomarkers in patient samples. The objective is to introduce novel mass spectrometry approaches for diagnosing HG, facilitating its clinical application and utilization in research studies investigating the underlying mechanisms involving GDF-15. The project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between chemists and clinicians at Umeå University and the University Hospital of Umeå.
The scholarship is for two years and is financed by the Kempe Foundation. The scholarship amount is 350,000 SEK per year and is tax-free.
Qualifications
To qualify as a postdoctoral scholarship holder, the postdoctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirements must be fulfilled no later than at the time of the decision about scholarship recipient.
Priority should be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree, according to what is stipulated in the paragraph above, no later than three years prior. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree prior to that may also be eligible. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, appointments of trust in trade union organizations, military service, or similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or other forms of appointment/assignment relevant to the subject area.
Doctoral degree should be within chemistry or related subject area with emphasis on mass spectrometry.
Additional requirements are:
Experience of sample preparation procedures for protein analysis
Experience in LC-MS/MS quantification of proteins
Meriting criteria are:
Experience in LC-MS/MS quantification of small molecules
Experience in proteomics and/or metabolomics analysis of biological samples
Experience in processing large datasets (e.g., programming skills in R or Python)
We are looking for candidates who are interested in women’s health and have a good command of the English language, both written and spoken. You have the ability and enjoy taking on research questions independently, taking initiatives, plan your own progression and are able to collaborate with a team.
