Innehåll

After an overview of GIS principles and of their relevance for marketing and other retail problems the participants have the opportunity to get experiences in the practical operation of a GIS system. Computer exercises address real-world cases and aim to exemplify the potential of GIS for retail planning and development.

Förväntade studieresultat

After completing the course the student should be able to ­- explain fundamental concepts related to cartography and vector GIS, ­- apply a spatial perspective on marketing and retail development, ­- produce and interpret thematic maps using GIS, ­- understand and apply basic principles of map design, ­- utilize spreadsheet programs to prepare spatial data for use in a GIS, and ­- use GIS as a tool in written reports on marketing and retail development issues.

Undervisningens upplägg

The course consists of lectures and exercises. Participation in some lectures and exercises may be mandatory. Relevant gender issues related to the contents are continuously integrated in the course. Exercises are conducted on PC computers.

Examination

Students are required to submit individually conducted exercises and to pass a written examination. The written exam is held at the end of the course and may cover both descriptive and analytic elements. Students who fail the scheduled final examination have the right to re-sit the examination soon afterwards. Examination based on the same syllabus as at the ordinary examination is guaranteed during two years after the first registration to the course. Students who have passed an examination cannot redo the examination to receive a higher grade. It is not possible to appeal against a received grade, i.e. to get it examined by a higher authority, but a student can always criticize the grading or ask another examiner to reconsider the examination. When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another grading teacher. A written request for an alternative examiner should be handed to the director of studies. ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER Credit transfer is always examined individually.
