The objective of this course is to develop critical ability of students and to increase the understanding of business administrative problems. The course task is to compose an independent work. The intention is that more extensive problems regarding current issues are to be thoroughly analysed and described. The thesis work should have a link to business problem solving and have its base in empirical material. Module 1. Seminars The aim of this module is to develop the students ability to examine written reports and investigations, from a critical and scientific point of view. This part of the course requires preparing three written supplementary oppositions on other completed Bachelors theses, including active participation at these thesis seminars. The supplementary opposition is always an individual assignment. The supplementary oppositions should be numbered consecutively (C1-C3). Module 2. Bachelor's thesis The thesis work should prove the students independent ability of investigating and developing an issue within the field of business administration. The emphasis lies in a critical choice of method, creating a relevant theoretical frame of reference, and an extensive analysis of the theoretical and empirical material, where the author should make a contribution to the chosen subject or problem area. The thesis work should generally be conducted in groups of two. A rule of thumb for the extent of the Bachelor's thesis is 40 - 60 pages. Module 3. Main opposition The students critical ability is also to be documented when conducting a main opposition/major critical analysis of someone elses Bachelors thesis work. The main opposition is an oral assignment and means being in charge of the critical examination of the other thesis during the seminar.
After completing the course, the students should be able to: - Independently choose and problemize a business related research question, - collect empirical material in a systematic and methodologically trustworthy manner, and - present the empirical material in a clear and comprehensive way, and - analyse the empirical material utilizing the theoretical framework, and - defend the thesis at a scientific seminar.
Univ: C-kurs i företagsekonomi, 15 hp, eller motsvarande.
When conducting thesis work the authors independence and responsibility is emphasised. This means that the supervisors influence and control is reduced in order to create the necessary conditions for individual autonomy, creativity and personal responsibility. In spite of this, students are expected to participate actively in joint discussions/seminars during the thesis period. It is implied that the ongoing thesis work is presented for the supervisor at least on three occasions during the thesis process.
The writing and defending of an independent work is the primary requirement of this course (Module 2). Students will also be evaluated on their ability to perform a major critical analysis of another Bachelors thesis and the quality of their written critical analyses of three other Bachelors theses (Module 1). In case of complementary work as instructed by the supervisor, this should be completed and delivered to the supervisor within four weeks after the final seminar. The following grading system will be used: Pass with distinction (Väl godkänd, Vg), Pass (Godkänd, G) and Fail (Underkänd U). For exchange students within formal agreements the ECTS grading scale will be used upon request. Academic credit transfer Academic credit transfers are according to the University credit transfer regulations.
The thesis shall normally be jointly written by two authors. As a rule of thumb, the paper's scope should be approximately 40-60 pages. It is not possible for two students who jointly write a thesis, to be registered for different types of theses (e.g. one student writing a bachelor and the other a masters thesis). Archive copies of the completed thesis shall, within 4 weeks after the thesis seminar, be submitted in both paper and in digital form. For details, see http://www.usbe.umu.se/english/student/theses-work-and-theses-archive/ Students at the International Business Program will write their bachelor thesis (Swedish; kandidatuppsats or C-thesis) in English to meet the requirements for obtaining a degree in the program. Similarly, when students at the International Business Program defend their thesis, the seminar will be held in English.
