Deferment of studies

If you have a valid reason, you can apply to defer the start date of studies on your course or programme. The following information explains the applicable rules and how to submit a deferment of studies application.

If you have been accepted to a course or programme but cannot start your studies now, you can apply for a deferment.

Valid reasons for a deferment

The reason for deferring the start of your studies should be beyond your control, such as social or medical reasons. Examples of valid reasons include disease, pregnancy, parental leave until the child turns one year of age, basic training for military conscription or civil alternative service, student union appointments, or that your employer has denied or postponed your application for leave for training, as per the Employee's Right to Educational Leave Act (1974:981).

Apply for a deferment

Submit your application to defer the start of your studies before the start date of the course or programme or as soon as possible.

Deferment decisions

Once Notifications of Selection Results for the final selection ahead of the relevant admissions round have been sent, applications for deferment will begin to be reviewed. Applications are processed as quickly as possible. Your deferment decision will be sent to you by email.

If you are informed that you have not been granted a deferral of the start of your studies, you have the option of appealing the decision.

More information about how to appeal a decision is available here.

Once you are ready to begin your studies

If you are granted a deferment, you are guaranteed a place on the programme in a future semester. To begin your studies, you need to:

  • Reapply for the course or programme at Universityadmissions.se no later than the application deadline before the semester you are allowed to begin your studies, as specified in the deferment decision.
  • Upload the deferment decision with your application at Universityadmissions.se no later than the deadline for providing supporting documentation.
