The course has three modules

The first module highlights art and artistic work in contemporary society both practically and theoretically.

The second module provides an introduction to artistic research.

The third module is based on the student's artistic work. In this module, students explore their own artistic work with the support of supervision.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, students should:

have in-depth knowledge and understanding of art and artistic endeavour and its function, relationship and role in contemporary society
demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding, both practically and theoretically, of the liberal arts.  
demonstrate the skills and knowledge, both practical and theoretical, required to work in the labour market and demonstrate the ability to clearly present and discuss their work in both national and international contexts, orally, in writing or otherwise.

Required Knowledge

Participation in the course requires that the student is admitted to the Master´s  Programme of Fine Arts, Umeå University.

Form of instruction

Teaching may consist of seminars, lectures, field studies, completion of practical assignments and individual artistic work with the help of supervision, individually and in groups. During the module, individual artistic work with the help of supervision, individually and in groups. During the module, the student is entitled to at least two individual supervision sessions and is given the opportunity to present and discuss their artistic work at seminars. In introductory seminars, the coming semesters are planned and each student presents their own planned artistic work orally and/or in writing.

The gender perspective is an important part of the programme and the course is conducted in such a way that both women's and men's experiences, knowledge, history and the significance of these are made visible and put into perspective both theoretically and practically. The course is also conducted in such a way that sustainability is made visible as an aspect of artistic practice and is emphasised both theoretically and practically.

The course is taught in Swedish and English.
Special written material may be distributed during the course.

Examination modes

The student is continuously examined during the course through assessment in seminars where artistic work is presented and discussed orally both individually and in groups.
Written assignments may occur.

The course is graded Pass or Fail. For students who have not passed the regular examination, an additional examination will be organised within three months and a make-up examination within one year, if necessary.

A student who has failed the regular examination and a re-examination for a course or part of a course is entitled to have another examiner appointed at the next re-examination, unless there are special reasons for not doing so. Requests for this are made to the Faculty of Humanities Board. Students are entitled to be examined on the same syllabus as the regular examination on at least two occasions up to two years after the first registration.
