Form of instruction

The course consists of individual artistic work with the help of supervision, individually and in groups. The teaching also consists of seminars, lectures, field studies and the realisation of practical tasks. During the course, students are entitled to at least two individual supervision sessions and are given the opportunity to present and discuss their artistic work in seminars. The student is expected to participate actively in the seminars held by other students when presenting their artistic work. The student works on the realisation of the final degree exhibition both individually and in groups.

During the course, students will also develop a plan for the joint work on the graduation exhibition and divide the roles and tasks required to finalise the exhibition together. The students will, with the support of supervision, plan and produce an exhibition publication that will be ready in connection with the degree exhibition and produced within the given financial framework.

In connection with the final exhibition, the student shall document their own degree project in the form of photographs, videos, sound recordings or in another form appropriate to the artistic work. The student shall present their artistic work in a final seminar where the work, together with the oral presentation, forms the basis for the assessment. The student must also oppose a fellow student's artistic work during the examination and complete a reflective text based on the student's artistic work.

The gender perspective is an important part of the programme and the course is conducted in such a way that both women's and men's experiences, knowledge, history and the significance of these are made visible and put into perspective both theoretically and practically. The course is also conducted in such a way that sustainability is an aspect of the artistic practice and is recognised both theoretically and practically.

Students can obtain financial support for their degree project by applying for funds at the beginning of the course via a special application form.

The course is taught in English.

Special written material may be distributed during the course. To be announced at the start of the course.

Examination modes

The student's artistic work is examined continuously during the course, partly in groups and partly individually.

The final seminar together with the degree exhibition, the degree text and the work on an exhibition publication constitute a special basis for assessment.

Written or oral examinations may occur. The choice of another or additional form of examination is presented at the start of the course.

The assessment of the degree project takes place at the end of the course in connection with the final degree exhibition where the students' artistic work is presented in the form of a group exhibition. Assessment is based on the following:

Student's artistic work
The student's participation and work in finalising the group exhibition and the exhibition catalogue
The documentation of the exhibition and the student's artistic work in an appropriate format
A reflective text based on the student's artistic work
An oral presentation of the artistic work in the context of the group exhibition where the presentation is open to the public
An oral presentation of the exhibited artistic work during the final seminar in connection with the group exhibition
The student's oral defence of their own degree project during the final seminar, and
Presentation of a fellow student's degree project during the final seminar.

Assessment is based on the student's artistic work and the student's ability to fulfil the course objectives for the Master's degree. The oral and written presentations shall include conscious reflection based on the student's own artistic work and may include the choice of method for the practical work, relevant national and international references within and outside the field of art, and other relevant knowledge that is of importance for the understanding of the artistic work. The student's participation and labour input in the production of the publication and the joint work around and with the degree exhibition are also taken into account in the assessment.

Deviations from the examination form of the syllabus can be made for a student who has a decision on pedagogical support due to disability. Individual adaptation of the examination form shall be considered based on the student's needs. The examination form is adapted within the framework of the syllabus's expected study results. At the request of the student, the
the teacher responsible for the course, in consultation with the examiner, shall promptly decide on an adapted form of examination. The decision shall then be communicated to the student.

The course is graded Pass or Fail. For students who have not passed the regular examination, an additional examination is organised within three months and a re-examination within one year, if necessary. A student who has failed the regular examination and a re-examination for a course or part of a course is entitled to have another examiner appointed at the next re-examination, unless there are special reasons for not doing so. Requests for this should be addressed to the Director of Studies at the Humanities Office. Students are entitled to be examined on the same syllabus as the regular examination on at least two occasions up to two years after the first registration.

Students may apply for credit transfer for all or part of a course based on previously completed education or professional activity. Credits are assessed individually according to Umeå University's credit transfer system. For more information, see https://www.umu.se/student/mina-studier/tillgodoraknande/
