Contents

The course builds on the courses Theory and history of Fine Arts, A and B given in the first and second term of studies. In the course theory and practice within aesthetics and art is treated. An overview is given of the central issues and conceptualizations in the aesthetic field with main focus primarily on modernism and contemporary art, but also older art is included.

Expected learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should be able to

  • present in-depth knowledge of the aesthetics and modern art and contemporary art theory
  • demonstrate an ability to critically and independently reflect on aesthetic issues both in oral form as well as in practical artistic creation, and
  • demonstrate the ability to understand and critically analyze literature in aesthetics and contemporary art.

Required Knowledge

A prerequisite for the course is that all courses from the first year of studies are completed and approved, alternatively if you apply to later part of the programme or as an exchange student; you have completed corresponding courses (60 ECTS) from another recognised school of Fine Arts and your work samples that you applied with are approved. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.

Form of instruction

The course is conducted in the form of seminars, lectures, practical exercises and the implementation of practical tasks with focus on discussions of aesthetic issues. The student will during the course plan, implement and present an independent artistic design work.

The language of instruction is largely English but if all students in the course, as well as the teacher holding the course, are Swedish-speaking, the language of instruction can be Swedish.

Examination modes

The course is assessed continuously in seminars where artistic design work and individual tasks are presented in writing and / or orally. Grading system: Pass or Fail.
