Contents

The student formulates under supervision an overall work plan for his/ her own artistic work. The student will get support to independently and creatively develop and realize his/ her own artistic investigative work. This work is discussed and reviewed continuously critically, individually and in groups. In group tutorials the student continues to be able to relate to their own and their fellow students' development, problems, methods and approaches. The relationship between the theoretical and practical choices are stressed and increasingly complex phenomena and issues concerning artistic work is processed individually and in groups. During the course the student also chooses to participate in at least one of the elective workshops offered during the term.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to

  • demonstrate increased knowledge and understanding of artistic work in the area of Fine Arts and substantially deeper knowledge, understanding and insight in the self-selected sub-area in which his/ her own artistic work is implemented
  • demonstrate familiarity with methods and processes to manage complex issues within the area of Fine Arts
  • within the selected range independently and creatively formulate new questions and realize his/ her own ideas and solve related artistic and design problems
  • demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on his/ her own and others artistic approach, as well as
  • show a further widening and deepening of the knowledge and skills concerning his/ her own artistic work after having participated in at least one optional workshop with completed tasks.

Required Knowledge

A prerequisite for the course is that you have a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts or equivalent, and if you apply as an exchange student your work samples that you applied with are approved. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.

Form of instruction

The course is conducted in the form of individual work and tutoring in the studios and workshops. In the initial seminars the coming work is planned and each student presents in oral and / or written form his/ her own planned artistic work. During the course, the student is entitled to at least three individual tutoring calls and getting his/ her own planned and conducted artistic work presented and discussed in at least three seminars. The student must also actively participate in the seminars where the fellow students' artistic works are presented. During the course the student also participates in at least one selected workshop and in that implements under supervision prescribed artistic tasks.

Some written material will be distributed in the course. Language of instruction is English.

Examination modes

The course is examined continuously at special seminars in which the student's own artistic work and presentation of such is assessed. How the student's critical examination and reflection is related to the fellow students' work is also assessed. Grading system: Pass or Fail.

Other regulations

For students who have not undertaken the Bachelor programme in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Umeå and completed an introductory course for work in the school's workshops such a course will be offered in the beginning of the term. Permission to use the workshops is given after completing the course.
