Research design in Social Science, 7.5 credits
Contents
The course aims to provide students with an introduction to research design in social science research related to environmental sustainability, socioeconomic equality, and justice. The course aims to develop students' knowledge and skills in formulating research problems, analyzing and evaluating different research design choices, and critically reviewing methodological approaches in scientific articles.
Expected learning outcomes
In-depth knowledge and understanding
• Students shall demonstrate an in-depth understanding of key concepts, strategies, and theories that form the basis of research design in social science research.
• Students shall demonstrate knowledge of research design and how different methodological approaches can be used to analyze social problems.
In-depth skills and abilitiy
• Students will be able to formulate relevant and well-defined research problems and justify and evaluate the choice of research design in relation to these.
• Students will be able to analyze and critically review methodological choices in scientific articles with regard to validity, reliability, and ethical considerations.
Evaluation ability and approach
• Students should be able to critically reflect on the consequences of research design for knowledge production, especially in studies concerning sustainability, equality, and justice issues.
Required Knowledge
Univ:120 credits, of which at least 60 credits in a main field of study. In addition, English 6/Level 2 from upper secondary school is required.
Form of instruction
The course is delivered online and the language of instruction is English. The course includes both recorded lectures and compulsory meetings.
Examination modes
Examination takes the form of individually written reports (U-G-VG) which are presented and discussed orally in connection with compulsory seminars (U-G).
