Contents

The course begins with an introduction to computer-based analysis of spatial data utilizing Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The course covers theoretical and applied cartography, as well as basic thematic analyses of spatial data derived from existing databases. The use of GIS in the study of tourism-related issues is given special attention.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to:

- explain fundamental concepts related to cartography and GIS,

- produce and interpret basic thematic maps using GIS,

- understand and apply fundamental principles of map design,

- utilize spreadsheet programs to prepare spatial data for use in a GIS,

- apply a spatial perspective on tourism development and tourism analysis, and

- use GIS as a tool in written reports and presentations on tourism-related issues.

Form of instruction

The course consists of lectures, exercises and seminars. Excercises, both under teacher supervision and self-intruction, is essential during the course. GIS - software (ArcDiesktop) is used during the course, which demand presence in the department computer lab.

Examination modes

Students are required to submit accounts of individually conducted exercises, as well as pass a written and a take-home examination. The examinations, which are held at the end of the course, may cover both descriptive and analytic elements.

Students who fail a scheduled final examination have the right to re-take the examination soon afterwards. Examination based on the same syllabus as at the ordinary examination is guaranteed during two years after the first registration to the course. It is not possible to appeal against a received grade, i.e. to get it examined by a higher authority, but a student can always question the grading or ask the examiner to reconsider the examination. When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another grading teacher appointed. A request for an alternative examiner should be submitted to the director of studies.
