Master's Thesis Preparation, 7.5 credits
Contents
This course focuses on preparations for writing a master’s thesis. The course includes scientific assignments within a selected and defined subject area of sports medicine or exercise physiology. The course comprises of a literature review within the chosen subject area, as well as the planning of an independent project in the form of a project plan, including an ethical evaluation.

Students must be able to
1. Analyse and synthesise the current state of research within a defined topic in sports medicine or exercise physiology using a structured approach.
2. Present and discuss a structured literature review in accordance with guidelines.
3. Develop and justify a coherent and feasible study plan for a future master’s thesis.

4. Evaluate and discuss ethical considerations relevant to a chosen topic and planned study.
5. Critically review and discuss peers’ study plans.
Required Knowledge
A Bachelor's degree that includes at least 180 credits or equivalent foreign degree. At least 90 credits are required in either exercise physiology/sports medicine/medicine or physiotherapy, or a degree from the Biomedical Scientist programme with specialisation Clinical Physiology, or a degree in Sports Science, of which at least 30 credits must be within the areas of exercise physiology, sports medicine, or medicine. In addition, English 6 is required.
Form of instruction
Distance learning with group supervision, lectures, seminars, and workshops. The course includes peer-review and collaborative elements. The course is taught in English but may also be offered in Swedish if all enrolled students are proficient Swedish speakers.
Examination modes
Learning Outcome 1: Assessed individually through a written assignment, graded Pass with Distinction, Pass, or Fail.
Learning Outcome 2: Assessed individually through an oral seminar, graded Pass, or Fail
Learning Outcome 3: Assessed individually through written assignment, graded Pass with Distinction, Pass, or Fail.
Learning Outcome 4-5: Assessed individually through an oral seminar, graded Pass, or Fail.
To obtain an overall grade of Pass, a minimum of Pass is required on all assessment components. To obtain Pass with Distinction, a grade of Pass with Distinction is also required on both the written assignments
Examiners may decide to deviate from the modes of assessment in the course syllabus. Individual adaptation of modes of assessment must give due consideration to the student’s needs. The adaptation of modes of assessment must remain within the framework of the intended learning outcomes in the course syllabus. Students who require an adapted examination – and have received a decision on the right to support from the coordinator at the Student Services Office for students with disabilities – must submit a request to the department holding the course no later than 10 days before the examination. The examiner decides on the adaptation of the examination, after which the student will be notified.
