Master's Programme in Sports Medicine with Specialisation Exercise Physiology, 120 credits
Entry Requirements
A Bachelor's degree that includes at least 180 credits or equivalent foreign degree. At least 90 credits are required in either exercise physiology/sports medicine/medicine or physiotherapy, or a degree from the Biomedical Scientist programme with specialisation Clinical Physiology, or a degree in Sports Science, of which at least 30 credits must be within the areas of exercise physiology, sports medicine, or medicine. In addition, English 6 is required.
Degree
After completion of the programme, a student can apply for a Degree of Master of Medical Science (120 credits) in accordance with the local qualification descriptor adopted by the Vice-Chancellor (see Umeå University's website). The official English name of the Swedish degree title Medicine masterexamen is Degree of Master of Medical Science (120 credits). Sports Medicine is a part of medical science that includes applied exercise physiology and clinical physiology. The Master's programme covers the first of these, applied exercise physiology, which includes the science of physical activity with emphasis on physical exercise, how physical exercise can be applied to prevent and treat ill-health, and improvement of physical performance. Conducting, interpreting and applying physiological tests are used to adapt exercise for individuals and groups based on their circumstances and goals. Transfer of Credits
A student who feels they have acquired knowledge from previous relevant studies or professional experience that is equivalent to courses or parts of courses on the programme can apply for credit. General
The Master's programme is designed as a mix of distance and campus-based teaching that includes compulsory on campus classes (about two per semester). The programme is given in English and consists of four semesters of full-time studies (120 credits). It is given with the help of an online learning platform. The main part of the programme consists of courses within Sports Medicine.
Teaching and learning forms
Teaching is primarily problem-based. This means that the student actively seeks out knowledge and uses critical thinking and problem-solving to actively acquire knowledge. Teaching comes in various form, including lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and field tests. Work is conducted both individually and in groups.
A part of the programme is given in cooperation with sports activities in the form of work-integrated learning placement and a Master's thesis. This means that parts of the programme can be conducted in the evenings and on weekends and include modules completed in other towns.
