A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS (credits) or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognised university. Specific entry requirements are: 90 ECTS in the main fields of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Electronics, and/or Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent. At least 17,5 ECTS in the subject of Mathematics including Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Vector Analysis, or equivalent. At least 20 ECTS in the subject of Physics including Classical Mechanics, or alternatively at least 50 ECTS in Biomedical Engineering and 7.5 ECTS in Classical Mechanics, or equivalent. At least 7,5 ECTS in the subject of Computer Science, or equivalent. At least 7,5 ECTS in Electronics or Applied Measurement Technology, or equivalent. At least 6 ECTS in the subject of Statistics or equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English 6/level 2.
Degree
After completing the programme, a student may apply for and obtain a Degree of Master of Science (120 ECTS) in accordance with the local degree description established by the Vice-Chancellor (see the Umeå University website). Main Field of Study: Biomedical Engineering
Description of the education for current education cycle
The programme is comprised of second-cycle studies. The intended learning outcomes can be found in Chapter 1, Section 9 of the Higher Education Act.
National goals for current degree
The national targets for the degree can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Appendix 2.
Local goals for current degree
The national targets for the degree can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Appendix 2.
Examination format
Each course syllabus states what examination formats are to be used in each course.
Grades
Each syllabus contains information about which grading scales are used for that particular course.
Transfer of Credits
A student who believes that they have knowledge from previous studies or professional experience equivalent to a course or course element in the programme may apply for credit transfer. An approved credit transfer means that the student does not have to take the element or elements covered by the decision. Information about credit transfer can be found on the Umeå University website.
General
Main field of study
Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines technical and physical principles with medical sciences in order to solve medical problems, measure and analyze physiological signals and develop equipment and applications for the healthcare.
**Compulsory courses**
Compulsory courses are those that all students enrolled in the programme are normally expected to complete. Students admitted to the programme are guaranteed a place on all compulsory courses, provided that they satisfy the entry requirements for the course in question. Course-specific entry requirements are stated in the respective course syllabus.
Elective courses
Elective courses consist of a range of courses offered by Umeå University within the programme, from which students independently select courses to apply for. Students are guaranteed admission to one of the elective courses, provided that they fulfil the eligibility requirements for the courses concerned. However, admission to a student’s first-choice course cannot be guaranteed. Eligibility requirements for each course are stated in the respective course syllabus.
**Optional courses**
Free elective courses within the programme are subject to the regular application and admission process. These courses may be taken at Umeå University or at other universities and higher education institutions in Sweden or internationally.
Under the heading “Study Plan”, the courses included in the programme are listed in the order in which they are normally taken.
Programme structure
The Master's Programme consists of two years of full-time study (120 ECTS), including a degree project in the main field of Biomedical Engineering. The programme contains compulsory courses that provide a foundation in biomedical engineering, safety, anatomy, physiology, and physiological signal processing. Students may follow a general biomedical engineering track or choose to specialize in biomechanics or medical imaging and signal analysis. Other courses may also be approved within the programme, for example to meet course-specific eligibility requirements. The programme concludes with a 30 ECTS credit Master's thesis in Biomedical Engineering.
Deferment of studies
Information about deferment of studies can be found on Umeå University's web site.
Approved leave from studies
Information about leave from studies can be found on Umeå University's web site. Students who leave the program shall notify the Program Study Advisor.
Discontinuation
Information about non-completion can be found on Umeå University's web site. The application is submitted to the Program Study Advisor.
