Sign up and prepare for an exam

You must always sign up in advance before you can take an exam. This page describes how. You can also read more about adapted assessment, booking a computer to use for an on-campus e-exam (a digital exam), or if you need to take an exam from a different location.

Always sign up for your exam

You always need to sign up if you intend to take a written exam. To be able to sign up for an exam, you must be registered on the course, and the signing up period must be open.

The sign-up period for an exam closes ten working days before the exam date. You cannot sign up later than that. Instead, you will have to wait until the next exam date if you fail to sign up on time.

You can unregister up until the time when the exam starts.

Adapted assessment for students with disabilities

If you have been granted disability support that allows adaptations during written examinations, please reach out to your contact for disability support well in advance before the exam, preferably at the start of the course. You must be in contact with your support person no later than ten working days before the exam.

You can read more about how to access it under the heading "Adaptations during written examinations" on this page.

Courses starting in the autumn semester 2025 or later will have a new way of notifying the need of adaptations during upcoming written examinations. More information will be available here at the beginning of the semester.

If you need to breastfeed during an exam

If you need to breastfeed your baby, you can do so while writing the exam. Breastfeeding cannot take place in the exam room, but you will have to leave the room to breastfeed in the company of an exam supervisor. You will not be able to bring your baby into the exam hall.

If you need to breastfeed during the exam, you must notify tentamensservice@umu.se at least ten working days before the exam.

Taking an exam at another location

Exams are normally taken at the location where the course is give, normally Umeå. You may have the right to take the exam at another location if you have sufficient reasons for it. Please contact your department at least a month before the exam date to apply for examination at another location.

If you are to take an exam in another location than it is scheduled, you cannot take it digitally through Inspera.

Rules regarding exams in other locations can be found in Rules for grades and examination.
