Effects of decomposition on soil functioning/respiration

Subject field

Soil ecology

Title

Effects of decomposition on soil functioning/respiration

Timing

15 ECTS, year round, bachelor

Background and aim

Decomposition starts with the leaching of material from the litter. This process is extremely understudied in literature. Since the leachate potentially includes a lot of easy to degrade (tasty) components, it could affect soil functioning on larger spatial scales, further away from where the litter is decomposing and affect soil respiration.

Method

A mesocosm experiment and measuring soil respiration.

Workplace

Departmen of Ecology and Environmental Science, Umeå.
