Entry Requirements

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS (credits) or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognised university. Specific entry requirements are: 90 ECTS in one of the following subjects; Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Electronics, or equivalent. At least 17,5 ECTS in the subject of Mathematics including Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Vector Analysis, or equivalent. At least 20 ECTS in the subject of Physics including Mechanics, or equivalent. At least 7,5 ECTS in the subject of Computer Science, or equivalent. At least 7,5 ECTS in Electronics or Applied Measurement Technology, or equivalent. At least 6 ECTS in the subject of Statistics or equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English 6/B.

Degree

After completing the programme, a student may apply for and obtain a Degree of Master of Science (120 ECTS) in accordance with the local degree description established by the Vice-Chancellor (see the Umeå University website). Main Field of Study: Biomedical Engineering

Description of the education for current education cycle

The programme is comprised of second-cycle studies. The intended learning outcomes can be found in Chapter 1, Section 9 of the Higher Education Act.

Transfer of Credits

A student who believes that they have knowledge from previous studies or professional experience equivalent to a course or course element in the programme may apply for credit transfer. An approved credit transfer means that the student does not have to take the element or elements covered by the decision. General

Main field of study
Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines technical and physical principles with medical sciences in order to solve medical problems, measure and analyze physiological signals and develop equipment and applications for the healthcare.

The studies in the Master's Programme in Biomedical Engineering comprise a total of 4 semesters (2 years), which corresponds to courses of a total 120 ECTS (credits). It includes an independent project (degree project) in Biomedical Engineering.
 
The compulsory courses provides basic knowledge in the subject of Biomedical engineering, Safety, Anatomy, Physiology and Physiological signals. The program offers profiles within Biomechanics or Medical imaging and Signal Processing. The student can also combine courses from the different profiles. Other (optional) courses can also be approved within the framework of the master's program, for example to fulfill course-specific eligibility requirements. Finally, a degree project is included which comprises of 30 ECTS within the programme's main field Biomedical Engineering.

Compulsory courses
Compulsory courses are the courses all programme students normally take. A student who has been  admitted to the programme is guaranteed a place in all compulsory courses, provided they meet the eligibility requirements for the course in question. The eligibility requirements are stated in each respective course syllabus.

Elective courses
Elective courses are a selection of courses offered by Umeå University within the scope of the programme. The student chooses at least 15 ECTS from the elective courses. The student is guaranteed a place in any of these courses, provided they meet the eligibility requirements for the course in question. However, the student is not guaranteed a place on the course that was their first choice. The eligibility requirements are stated in each respective course syllabus.

Optional courses
Optional courses at Umeå University or other universities can be part of the program. The student is not guaranteed a place in the optional courses.

The compulsory courses (75 ECTS in total, whereof 67,5 ECTS in the subject of Biomedical Engineering, advanced level) are listed in chronological order below. The eligibility requirements are found in each course syllabus. 

45 hp elective/free courses are needed when you apply for your degree. At least 15 ECTS must be from the elective courses and at least 22,5 ECTS must be on master's level.
