Contents

The course deals with the conditions and opportunities of art in today's society. It examines the challenges of today’s international art world (the exhibition industry - encompassing museums, biennials and festivals, art in public, independent art spaces etc. - and the global art market and its peculiar economy as exercised by galleries and collectors. It also addresses issues connected to the in relation to the public hand (grants, commissions etc.). The focus is on economic and practical conditions necessary for a professional artistic career.

Expected learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will

  • demonstrate insight into the economic and practical conditions and opportunities of the art world and how art functions in today's society,
  • demonstrate the fundamental ability to explain and discuss verbally and in writing the art world’s mechanics, its activities and artistic issues in dialogue with different groups – in national and particularly international contexts;
  • demonstrate insight into the relationship of contemporary art and artistic practice to social conditions.

Required Knowledge

Participation in the course requires that the student is admitted to the Master's programme in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå University.

Form of instruction

Teaching consists of seminars and practical exercises as well as individual assignments.

Teaching is in English.

Certain relevant written material is distributed during the course.
 

Examination modes

The course is continuously examined in seminars where individual assignments are presented in writing and / or verbally. For students who have not been approved at the regular exam opportunity, a further examination opportunity will be arranged within three months as well as a sampling test within one year.

Grades are Pass or Fail.

Other regulations

Language of instruction is English.

Credits are individually tested according to Umeå University's credit rating system.
