Contents
The course will provide the students with a thorough grounding in the relevant study of history, research, and theory of exhibition-making. It will emphasize on present exhibitions as well as the history of important exhibitions in relation to today’s multi-facetted approaches to curatorial practices. The course teaches the nature of artistic and curatorial practices as fully interdisciplinary, including painting, sculpture, film and video, photography, new media, performance, installation, research-based practices, and other aspects of knowledge production.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall:
show knowledge and understanding of current curatorial practice in contemporary art, as well as
show knowledge and understanding of how such curatorial practice can be documented and presented
be able to identify different paths and possibilities for curatorial practices
be able to critically analyze the production of exhibitions in different formats through a greater understanding of curatorial practice.
Required Knowledge
Participation in the course requires that the student is accepted into the Master's programme in Fine Arts at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and has received the grade Pass in at least 25,5 ECTS credits from the first semester.
Form of instruction
The teaching consists of lectures, seminars and practical exercises with individual and collective assignments.
Examination modes
The course is examined in seminars where the student reports a text in connection with his own artistic work. For students who are not approved at the regular exam opportunity, a further examination opportunity will be organized within three months as well as a sampling test within one year.
Grades on the course are Pass or Fail.
