Contents

The course is a continuation and deepening of the Critical Writing course within the bachelor’s program and continues the discussion and analysis of the text and the writing role in contemporary art that began there. The course forms the basis for the students’ own artistic practice and for the text part of the degree work during term 4. The course includes practical exercises where the student formulates a critical text in connection with her/his own artistic work.
 

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to

  • demonstrate knowledge of the meaning and role of text in contemporary art
  • show increased skills to formulate a text in connection with her/his own artistic practice.
  • be knowledgeable about the importance of text and criticism within contemporary art 
  • be able to write a thesis about their own final exam project that is exhibited at the graduation show.
  • show ability to give constructive criticism both on your own artistic work and to fellow students, and integrate reflection upon such critic into the future practice.

Required Knowledge

Participation in the course requires that the student is admitted to the Master's programme in Fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå University and has received the grade Pass in all courses given in the first semester.

Form of instruction

The teaching consists of seminars, lessons and practical exercises and includes individual supervision, and group dicussions. Language of instruction is English. Certain relevant written material is distributed during the course.

Examination modes

The course is examined in seminars where the student reports a text in connection with his own artistic work. For students who are not approved at the regular exam opportunity, a further examination opportunity will be organized within three months as well as a sampling test within one year.

Grades on the course are Pass or Fail.
