The purpose of the course is to give students who have little or no previous knowledge of Swedish history a comprehensive picture. The course focus on certain aspects of Swedish history from the prehistoric age to the present day. However the main focus will be on the Viking age, a period of great changes in Sweden. During this period the foundations for the Swedish state were laid. It was also during this period that the Swedish people first encountered Christianity, a religion which would eventually become the state´s religion. We will examine these changes within the country, as well as the conditions in which the people lived. But naturally, the focus will be on the Vikings. Most Swedish Vikings made their journeys eastward, were they played an important role in the formation of Russia, and many were employed as imperial guards in the Byzantine empire. These, and other aspects of the Vikings exploits, are topics that will be discussed.

Expected learning outcomes

- the student must have an overall knowledge of Swedish history from the prehistoric age to the end of the Viking age - the student shall be able to discuss social, political and cultural change in Sweden brought about by Christianity during the period - the student shall be able to discuss living conditions among people from a class and gender perspective

Form of instruction

Teaching is conducted through tutorials and group exercises.

Examination modes

Examination will include written reports and individual essays. The grade is an overall assessment of the performance at the various examinations and is awarded first when all of the compulsory modules are passed. Academic credit transfer Academic credit transfers are reviewed individually.
