Contents

The course gives the student the opportunity to apply a scientific approach while independently and critically formulating and solving problems in Informatics with a specialization in Digital Management and Innovation. The course includes identification of relevant research areas, formulation of research problems, questions and limitations, design and implementation of a study, as well as the preparation of an academic thesis. The thesis is presented and defended in a seminar. When working on the thesis, the student is given knowledge of and insight into current methodological issues relevant to scientific work in Informatics.

Expected learning outcomes

Regarding knowledge and understanding the student is, after the course, expected to be able to:
1. Identify and explain phenomena of both societal and subject relevance.
2. Describe relevant literature in relation to the research question, within the program's subject area.

Regarding proficiency and aptitude the student is after the course, expected to be able to:
3. Formulate research questions within the program's subject area.
4. Design and carry out a methodologically and ethically well-founded study, appropriate to the subject area and based on the chosen research question.
5. Conduct an analysis of empirical material in a way that generates general knowledge about the research question under investigation.

Regarding evaluative capacity and approach the student is, after the course, expected to be able to:
6. Relate the research question, analysis, and conclusions to current scientific literature within the subject area.
7. Present the thesis clearly in both written and oral form, as well as engage with and discuss the work of others.

Required Knowledge

Prerequisites for the course are at least 30 credits of completed program courses from the Master's Programme in Digital Management and Innovation, or equivalent.

Form of instruction

Learning is supported mainly by supervision sessions, but the course may also include lectures and seminars. Some teaching sessions may be compulsory. If the course so requires, necessary computer applications may be provided and introduced. During the course students are free to use the departmental computer labs. Teaching is normally done in English. Good writing skills and good knowledge of the English language are important in order to be able to complete the course.

Examination modes

The examination modes applied are written assignment, seminar, and compulsory session. Written assignment includes a research proposal, as well as a completed thesis and the publication thereof. Seminar involves oral presentation and defense of the thesis as well as opposition on others' thesis work. The grading scale for the course is Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G), and Fail (U).

Students who do not pass the exams during the course will be given a second opportunity soon afterwards. Students who do not pass after these two attempts have the possibility to complete remaining assignments during subsequent re-exam periods.

A student who has failed twice on a course, or part of a course, is entitled to ask for another examiner or grading teacher, unless there are special reasons against it. A request for a change of examiner or grading teacher is made to the Director of Studies at the Department of Informatics.

If special reasons exist, the examiner has the right to decide on another examination form.

Other regulations

The thesis must be written by two authors together. It is not possible for two students to co-author a thesis project at different levels (eg. bachelor's and master's level). Supervision of the thesis is only guaranteed for the duration of the course and for registered students.
