Contents

Module 1: Mobility theories and methods, 4.5 ECTS In this section different social and economic geography perspectives on mobility will be examined, with particular focus on the driving forces and consequences of mobility and the relationship between different forms of mobility. Transport, tourism, migration, and diffusion will be discussed, along with various types of daily mobility such as commuting. The emphasis is on theories of mobility and methods used to study these phenomena. Module 2: Tourism planning, 7.5 ECTS This section gives a more in-depth introduction to destination planning theory and practice. Tourism planning is discussed in this context as the link between the public sector, business/industry and the local community. In this section, there is a focus on a more in-depth exploration of tourism planning. Module 3: Field study, 3 ECTS In this section the student is given the opportunity to put theoretical knowledge into practice on-site in a chosen region. The work is to be based on current, relevant literature.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able: ­-to identify different types of mobility and understand the relationship between them, ­-to recognize current issues in mobility research, -to identify and analyze different causes and consequences of changes in mobility, ­-to understand different models for planning within tourism studies, ­-to recognize the various private and public actors and their roles and interests in tourism planning, ­-to distinguish the different theoretical starting points for tourism planning, and -to apply these theories and methods in a chosen region.

Economic and political geography, 15 ECTS, Population geography, 15 ECTS, Social planning, 15 ECTS, Methods in human geography, 15 ECTS, Introduction to tourism, 15 ECTS and Tourism destinations, 15 ECTS, or the equivalent.

Form of instruction

The course is taught in the form of lectures, seminars, group exercises and/or field work. Seminars, exercises and field work are obligatory. Gender issues related to the course content will be presented continuously throughout the course. The language of instruction is English.

Examination modes

Examination is by written or oral exam and presentation of independently completed tasks. The grades given for this course are pass with distinction, pass and fail. The opportunity to retake the examination or another exam based on the same syllabus as the regular exam is guaranteed for two years after the student’s initial registration for the course. The student cannot appeal a grade, for example to a higher authority, but the student may always make comments on the scoring or request that the examiner reconsider the decision. A student who has taken two examinations in a course or a part of a course without obtaining a passing grade is entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are special reasons to the contrary (Higher Education Ordinance 6, Chap. 11b §). The student may submit a request for a different examiner to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER Credit transfer is always examined individually.
