The course departs from the differences in economic development on local, regional, national and global levels, not least within the European Union (EU). Which processes have contributed to the geographical patterns and changes over time? How can scientific approaches and methods contribute to an enhanced understanding of these processes, but also to political decision-making influencing territorial development? During the course concepts, theories and issues related to economic geography, regional development, growth and welfare are introduced. Focus is on conditions in developed economies, especially Sweden, the Nordic countries and Europe. Changes during recent decades are emphasized. In addition, methods, among them GIS-applications, relevant for regional analyses, as well as practices within the fields of strategic/territorial development and regional policy, are dealt with. Students that are admitted to the course are expected to have basic skills in GIS, equivalent to those learned during the course Human Geography and urban Theory.
Required Knowledge
Univ: 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS of which in a major field of subject, including 7,5 ECTS in quantitative methods, or equivalently.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.
