Contents
The course involves planning and conducting a independent thesis work in an area relevant to cognitve science. The student chooses a subject and relevant scientific methods in consultation with a supervisor. The thesis work is conducted under supervision and is presented in a written thesis. Also the presentation and opposition of another students thesis and the defence of the thesis is part of the course.
Expected learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student should : - show a deepend ability to independently identify and formulate well defined research questions - show a deepend ability to independently plan and with adequate methods conduct and document a project in a written thesis - be able to integrate knowledge, analyze results and discuss complex issues - be able to apply methods for effective literature search and choose relevant literature in relation to the reaearch questions at hand - show awareness of the ethical aspects of the research project - independently in an oral and written form present and discuss conclusions with others - in a constructive manner examine, evaluate and discuss another thesis as an opponent - show extensive knowledge in cognitive science
Required Knowledge
Courses corresponding to 90 credits (hp) in cognitive science or equivalent, including 15 credits at an advances level in cognitive science or equivalent.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and no individual score below 5.0. TOEFL PBT
(Paper-based Test) with a minimum total score of 530 and a minimum TWE score of 4. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum total score of 72 and a minimum score of 17 on the Writing Section).
Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to the level required for basic eligibility for higher studies.
Form of instruction
The teaching involves individual supervision and seminars with the course coordinator and the other students. The thesis work can be done at another university, institute, company or organization but a supervisor from the home department must always be involved.
Examination modes
The course is examined in four parts; one thesis-pm, the content and the writing process of the thesis, the presentation and opposition of another theis and the defence of the students own thesis. At the most two students can write a theis together. A thesis committé of researchers evaluate the thesis and suggest a grade to the examiner who decides on a final grade. The thesis is graded with one of the grades Fail, Pass or Pass with distinction. The other examined parts are graded with either Fail or Pass. To pass the course all parts have to be passed. If the students failes new examination opportunities are arranged according to schedule. The student can be examined five times at the most. CREDIT TRANSFER An application for credit transfer can be made for a complete cpurse or part of a course based on earlier studies or professional experience. If the application is denied all togehter or partly a written motivation will be given. If the application is denied It is possible to appeal to the board of Higher education.
